Former Sheriff's deputy pleads guilty, cocaine distribution

A former Wayne County sheriff's deputy is facing prison time after he pleaded guilty today to a cocaine trafficking charge in federal court in Port Huron.
Dorian J. Merriewether, 36, of Farmington Hills, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute and distribution of cocaine.
Merriewether used his position as a sheriff's deputy to smuggle cocaine, marijuana and other contraband to Wayne County jail inmates between December 2004 and February 2005, according to records filed in the case.
"A deputy sheriff who is sworn to uphold the law cannot be permitted to violate that law," U.S. Attorney Stephen Murphy said in a prepared statement.
"This office will vigorously investigate and pursue any allegations of public corruption, especially those involving police officers."
U.S. District Judge Lawrence P. Zatkoff is to sentence Merriewether Nov. 15. The maximum penalty Merriewether could face is 20 years in prison.
Merriewether's lawyer, Stephen Rabaut of Sterling Heights, could not be reached for comment.
