Bacopa monnieri is a perennial, creeping herb whose habitat includes wetlands and muddy shores. Common names include Water Hyssop and brahmi (note: brahmi is also the Ayurvedic name given to Centella asiatica and other herbs).
It has been used for centuries to help benefit epilepsy, memory capacity, increase concentration, and reduce stress-induced anxiety. It is listed as a nootropic, a drug that enhances cognitive ability.
Another interesting effect is dream recall: on a 225mg cap-form extract, taken twice daily, the subject will remember dreams - often starting on the 2nd night. This is not recommended for people with a high stress level, as they might remember both unpleasant dreams and downright nightmares.
Long-term memory capacity enhancement is especially evident after 4-5 days of consumption of 225mg cap-form extract, taken twice daily. After that time, attempts to recall events that occurred many years ago will be immediately successful, and very vivid. This might not be noticeable until such a recall attempt is made. The effect lasts about a week after consumption has stopped.
More rare, and requiring longer periods of consumption of the above dosage, are memory flashes of entire periods of time in the space of a few seconds (e.g. recalling the entire past year at once). There is anecdotal evidence of this happening on day 11 of consumption.
When practicing the Rebirthing western hyperventilation technique, consumption of Brahmi an hour prior to the session makes the session about 3 times deeper/stronger. If the session is proceeded by a deep massage of some sort (e.g. deep tissue massage, Thai massage), the effect is 6-20 times deeper/stronger (X8 on average) than "regular" Rebirthing.
In India, this plant has also been used traditionally to consecrate new born babies in the belief that it will open the gateway of intelligence. Recent studies suggest bacopa may improve intellectual activity.
This plant is also known as Thyme-leafed gratiola and Moneywort. Synonyms include Herpestris monnieria, Moniera euneifolia, Lysimachia monnieri, and Bacopa Monniera.

SWIM thinks it is pretty good. It is one of the few worthwhile natural nootropics, especially (to SWIM) the only one that isnt effective mostly due to its vasodilatory effects (like ginkgo or vinpocetine). A recent study confirmed this, stating that especially the bacoside B was effective.
swim found Planetary Herbals a good brand for this.
However, enough has to be taken and over quite some time. It can also produce quite lucid, yet hard to control dreams. SWIM is not someone who is a responder to everything plant-ish, actually quite the opposite. However, it is hard to describe what it does exactly, somehow there is an overall feeling over more clarity and better ability to remember things, while being calm. This is especially outstanding when compared to the -racetams, which produce a similar feeling that is for SWIM often accompanied with a little bit of restlessness, both cognitive and psychological, especially during exam time when he is prone to overdo it a bit, pushing the limit.
For swim, bacopa and the racetams, apart from vasodilators which have cognitive-improvement side-effects (oxygen, blood in the brain), these two are the best nootrics that do not produce profound (or any) side effects.
