Top Schools For “Higher” Learning - USA

Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina is the nation's most marijuana-friendly campus, according to The Princeton Review's annual sourcebook, "The Best 366 Colleges," released this week. The report, which is based on candid survey results from 120,000 students nationwide, ranks hundreds of colleges in various categories such as academic achievement and quality of life.

Warren Wilson College topped Bard College (New York), the University of Vermont, the University of California at Santa Cruz, and Lewis & Clark College (Oregon) to emerge as this year's top school for "higher" learning. The US Air Force Academy ranked #1 on Princeton's "Top 20" list of least pot-friendly campuses.

Warren Wilson College was also ranked by The Princeton Review as one of the most politically active campuses in America.

The top 20 on the list:

1 Warren Wilson College

2 Bard College

3 University of Vermont

4 University of California-Santa Cruz

5 Lewis & Clark College

6 Pitzer College

8 New College of Florida

9 The University of Texas at Austin

10 Sarah Lawrence College

11 West Virginia University

12 Wesleyan University

13 Guilford College

14 Skidmore College

15 University of Colorado, Boulder

16 Ithaca College

I was thinking about taking one year at Berkeley, which is near San Francisco. I know it's not listed, but from it's location, I guess it's not that "anti pot" (I'm from europe)

Berkeley used to be very heavy into drugs, maybe about 30 years ago, but today its a very good school in a very competitive academic environment. The schools a little bit too nerdy to really be competitive with some of the colleges on the list.

Swim has had a lot of good times at a certain school near the top of his list.

Never been to UCSB, but swim has a good friend who is pretty heavy into drug experimentation who seems to enjoy himself. UC Davis also I hear is pretty open minded, even though its not on the list.

There are two major products that come out of Berkeley: LSD and UNIX. We don't believe this to be a coincidence.

Re: Top Schools For “Higher” Learning - USA

EDIT: my bad. That list is marijuana-friendly colleges from a review of the best colleges. I got confused.

Princeton is number 1 over all, and Berkeley is the top public school.

Take a year at Berkeley if you can, like half the professors (maybe more) have nobel prizes or some other insane credit.

Their chemistry college is probably the best in the US, and is world famous for its achievements. And in the case of "marijuana friendly," UCSC is definitely up there, but Berkeley is there too. You have to keep in mind however that most of the really really smart guys up there don't use drugs though.

From experience having a nobel prize might mean a good mind, but not necessarily a good professor. . . not saying its the case here, but just a thought!

Does it mean fewest busts and prosecutions or do people just openly smoke a lot of bud there?

I'm wondering about that. It probably has to do with the number of people who smoke, quality of bud, availability, etc. as they do this in survey form. Then again it could have just been some really subjective questions like "Is marijuana common here?" and they extrapolate from that.

Its funny... Ann Arbor, MI is probably one of the most marijuana friendly towns you can find in the US (if not the most), but the University of Michigan doesn't cut you any slack, due to federal funding.

Come to think of it, unless you go to a private school where they don't charge people for drug offenses on campus, there really isn't a marijuana-friendly campus to go to.

Or a tiny, residential public college with campus police force that protects and serves the real needs of 600 17-23 year old kids with more brains than sense*.

*The peanut gallery tells me this demographic has been historically present in spades at #8.

Most all schools will have at least some drug scene or dealings going on, you don't really need to search out the most fiend-friendly one!

Seriously though, I would just look at which schools would be a better fit. If its a decent size school there will be something around. Certain parts of the country may afford students better or cheaper bud (or more favorable legislation), or maybe a school in an urban area would provide easier access to some substances, but its not likely a campus would be completely dry most places - unless you go to a service academy or an ultra religious school.

Unless drugs have become so important to swiy that they supercede all other considerations, my Panda would recommend that swiy just not worry about it if he is considering applying to schools. He'll find them out when he gets to wherever should he really want to, and it may likely go better than if he went to the biggest drug taking school he could find and was around them all the time. Its good when all your friends aren't habitual drug users (or even casual ones), as if you feel the need to take a break should it start getting to you, you can avoid it easier.

I'll second that. My cat spent far too much time getting high at college, which was great fun. More studying would have been much more helpful to his future life in retrospect! That sounds like a lecture but it's true!

Swim thinks the proper way to view drugs and education is as complements to each other, especially if like swim you use drugs for mind-expansion. Sure education is much less fun, but if you get into a field that you find interesting and are good at, you will want to think about it and talk about while high. An important key to this is to find drug buddies who are interesting and intelligent and who you can bounce ideas off of. Swim has had some very cool discussions while tripping with other computer science or economics students (swims area of study).

Ultimately a strong education in something you love will make your drug experiences have a lot greater depth.

Swim seconds this opinion. His experience as a cognitive neuroscience student has drastically opened the potentials of his psychedelic experiences. His flat-mate is a neurobiology major, so their conversations under the influence consist mostly of how the chemical is acting on their brains, and how that manifests itself behaviorally. They have incredible, open trips, in which controlled doses are intensively analyzed from a bi-neural approach. His general understanding of neuroscience would be half what is is today if he did not experiment with psychedelics and read books on their actions. Swim goes to a school within the top half-dozen, and experiments greatly with marijuana, learning the detailed activity it manifests neurologically. He has had the opportunity to take classes like "Altered States of Consciousness", "Neuropharmacology" and "Drugs and the Brain". The education of neuroscience and the psychedelics seems fatefully intertwined in a glorious bout of understanding, and swim is enamored at its glory.

NYU is very lenient as well as a very large avid and friendly drug using community

I have yet to hear of anyone receiving more than a "Warning" for being caught with weed. There are hallways in dorms that have perpetually smelled of weed so bad that the RA's don't even bother. There really isn't fear of repercussion. The only downside is the price of drugs in NYC.
