Hope those pictures up there aren't actualy pictures of your friends... that would be just stupid AND incriminating.
Also, somebody mentioned above that cheaper alcohol causes hangovers; when actually a hangover is caused by dehydration. Alcohol takes water out of your system to help flush. To avoid hang overs, drink plenty of water before, during, and especially after you are drinking. Chug water before you go to bed, and drink at least a bottle of water in the morning as soon as you wake up. |

Everclear rants and recipes
I remember I drank a few swigs of this stuff straight when I was a teenager in the name of excess. This was enough to give me a good buzz for the night, but the pain of drinking it and horrible taste really makes the experience only fun so that you can say you did it I suppose.
I recently found a liquor store by my house which sells the two sizes at fair prices, so I decided to buy the mega bottle to use as a solvent for extractions and to possibly have some drinking fun with some friends. I remember having everclear punch at a party last October (Somewhere around 3 to 4 parts fruit punch and 1 part everclear served in icy buckets). The taste of the everclear was not really that noticible in this drink. The drink tasted more like carbonated fruit punch than anything. This is probably why people usually get really drunk at parties serving this. As remarked about earlier in this thread, I also did not have a hangover despite drinking about five cups in about 3 hours (a lot of drinking for me). I simply had a raw stomach the next morning. I know little of the science of hangovers, but I know that different drinks produce stronger/weaker hangovers due to things present in the drink other than the alcohol. Anyways, I'm wondering if anyone (especially bartenders ) has any everclear recipes that they enjoy other than the classic fruit punch n everclear. The following is a list of recipes that my friends and I tried last night and liked. As always with drink recipes, parts refers to volume.Everclear & Mountain Dew Amp shots 2 parts mountain dew amp a dab of apple snowcone flavor 1 part everclear dip the shotglass in sugar to have sugar on the rim and slam it back. I wouldn't recommend drinking too much of this given it is 33% alcohol by volume. make sure that it is chilled, or it will burn a lot. It is sweet n tasty as described. As always, drink responsibly. Don't drink n drive and don't drink more than you can handle. |

Ethanol
This has probably been discussed, but I was wondering if you could really drink *ethanol* not isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Do stores even sell ethanol rubbing alcohol anymore or did they make it so you can't drink ethanol rubbing alcohol knowing that you can make 50% alcohol? of course you could add the honey and salt to give it taste because im sure it tastes like shit

rubbing alc - "methylated spirits" is usually ethanol + methylated so as the weasels who drink it will go blind.
pure ethanol can be volumetrically diluted 50% with water to make vodka. but why the heck would you add honey and salt to vodka? might i suggest some olives and a hint of dry vermouth? stick with the 12oz's, mouse.Edited by: nanobrain |

yeah or some cranberry juice or something. My only experience with ethanol (everclear 190 proof) was while separating the lysergides from MG's. Some account that I had read said that they would hit sooner if you swooshed the ethanol sol. in your mouth for a few moments. Even diluted this burned my gums raw. Careful everyone this stuff is close to drinking gasoline. I wondered if it was possibly the lysergides that blistered me but under later and more careful testing of both subs. separately found it was the ethanol.

Try resting the alcohol with water filter charcoal to eliminate impurities or be quite sure it ispure ethanol or you´ll sepend a season at the bathroom! |

High proof ethanol for the lazy...
SWIM found some interesting information the other day while surfing the internet. One can distill off ethanol from mouthwash with fairly little risk of getting sick from the other nasty junk that remains in the MW.
Listerine contains 21-23% ethanol, along with some other ingredients. Drinking Listerine is unhealthy and very dangerous, since it contains quite a few toxic substances (the most toxic being the ethanol). Standard Active Ingredients of Cool Mint Listerine and their Boiling Points: Thymol 233C Methyl Salicylate 223C Menthol 212C Eucalyptol 176-177C Water (Not Active) 100C Ethanol 78.3C By looking at the table, it is clear that the easiest way to isolate ethanol would be to heat the listerine to about 78C, allowing the ethanol to boil. Collection equipment could be fitted over the boiling container to accumulate the ethanol and allow it to condense into another container. Such collection equipment could range from an oven lid with piping affixed to the vent to a specially designed system of glass piping. Since 78C is a relatively low temperature, this could be accomplished using the top burners on an oven or, more precisely, a hotplate. The liquid should be stirred while it is heating to ensure uniformity of temperature. The temperature is best measured using a digital thermometer, although a mercury thermometer could be used as well. Starting from a low temperature, gradually increase the temperature in steps of several degrees until you reach 78C. If the liquid starts boiling anywhere before the temperature is 78C, allow it to boil until the boiling stops, since it is one of the inactive ingredients and you don't want it mixing with the ethanol. So SWIM tried it. Went out and bought two liters of generic brand of mouthwash, it was cheaper than listerine and contained 26.8% ethanol instead of just 21%. Anyway then SWIM sent this mess through a small reflux still. And collected about 2-2.5 cups of liquid, SWIM probably could have distilled more but my equiptment was acting up. The resulting liquid was very pure and strong, sadly it still reeked of menthol but for the price SWIM paid and the little time spend actually doing anything compared to fermenting a wash etc. it was worth it. Also a word to the wise it will funk up whatever room you distill it in, so as always SWIM can only suggest you do this outside. |

Oh yes and SWIM forgot to mention after all is said and done dilute this stuff many times over to make it drinkable or else you'll seriously hurt yourself

This is very interesting. I have heard of doing things of this sort with Listerine, but i never knew the exact way.
Good find! |

Ether,
You mentioned that your final product tasted like menthol. Did you take your distillate and run it back through your still?? If you didn't, this technique will turn 50-60% ethanol moonshine into 90-95% ethanol. It removes MOST of the moonshine taste... so a lot of shiners don't even do this. Try this to remove the flavor and then, don't forget to water it down. Might want to try diluting it with something flavorful to offset the taste (or something similar to menthol like mint or cinnamon--that way, the menthol might even accentuate your final product. Although, you'll still want to throw up after smelling it distill all day!) Also, did you run the final product through activated charcoal? If not, just dump it into a regular brita filter (or any other cheapo carbon water filtration device). The menthol taste is not necessary if you're truly evaporating the ethanol alone in your still. So, be sure that your temperature stays below 210F--preferably below 190 F. It won't come out as fast, but it also won't taste like eating an ashtray full of KOOL 100's butts. |

Everclear is a brand of grain alcohol (ethanol), available at concentrations of 95% alcohol (190 proof) and 75.5% (151 proof). It is illegal to purchase the 190 proof version in many U.S. states. Due to Everclear's lack of sugar and impurities (congeners), it may make drinkers less vulnerable to hangovers.
Commonly Everclear is also injected into oranges or other fruit and comsumed without the knowledge of those around them due to it's illegality is certain states/countries. To say that "one drop" in a can of soda has that much of an effect is a little bit of an exaduration but you definately can taste it put it that way. There are a few other alcohols that have that kind of high content of alcohol however everclear is the best known. |

Re: Everclear in canada
Well , depends on your province
In Ontario the hardest stuff you can buy is 151 or Wray and Nephew 151(62%) In quebec you can buy alcool ( 75% or 94%) Otherwise drive to the border |

Re: Everclear in canada
As Thatman stated, it depends on the province. SWIM can't remember every province where Everclear is available, but he's pretty sure that it can be purchased in Alberta.

not true, alcool can be bought in ontario too. it's actually called 'alcohol 95%' or something generic like that but it's exactly the same stuff as alcool. check the lcbo website.
