kicking hydros..to taper or not to taper?
SWIM has abused hydros much more than he'd like to admit throughout this summer, and is finally putting his will to the test and dropping the habit. The kicker: he is a major academic and only has one week until he must return to college, and thus has to be through with most of the hell within 7 days. He sustained a 60-120 mg daily intake of hydro for about 2 months, and three days into his mission he is definitely experiencing some physical withdrawl.
Medical assistance is out of the question and probably also unnecissary, but he has a large supply of his addiction left in his stash spot, and for the last 3 days he has used 5 mgs each day to ease the withdrawls. Also, he is taking tons of immodium to help out his poor stomach/sphincter. The 5 mgs are not quite a cure-all: he still feels pretty shitty. He thinks his best course of action may be to just go cold turkey starting tomorrow so that he can be through with the withdrawl come school time. Any thoughts? SWIM knows his habit isn't nearly as serious as the numerous other opiate addictions, so he doesn't want to sound pathetic or bitchy. However, he has nobody else to confide in about this, and hopes he can vent a bit on the forum. He will update later about his progress. Thanks for reading and any advice/encouragement will be greatly appreciated. SWIM has seen how this forum has helped others with their addictions and hopes it can do the same for him. |

Re: kicking hydros..to taper or not to taper?
Man if SWIY has made it to day 3 already just go cold turkey. The worst part of WD's will be over by day 5-6 at the most. SWIY probably won't be completely back to normal for up to 2 weeks but after day 5-6 SWIY will definitely feel a ton better and be able to function and go to class, etc. SWIY might just feel a little drag ass and depressed but no where near like SWIY feels now.
Just tough another few days out and go cold turkey. Get the suffering over with before school starts back. |

Re: kicking hydros..to taper or not to taper?
SWIM would taper, esp. if he has taken that dose daily. If SWIY has enough he should taper his dose down by taking off 5-10mg daily. It may take swiy into when classes start to do this but I think that by tapering himself he won't have to deal with problems while trying to do academic work.
SWIM was addicted to tramadol for nine months and got off in about 2 weeks without going through bad withdrawls by tapering down his dose. good luck! |

Re: kicking hydros..to taper or not to taper?
After three days of taking a maintenance dose of 5 mg hydro, SWIM is now on his third day of cold turkey and thinks the withdrawls must be peaking--he's got chills, bad anxiety/depression and a nasty stomach ache. SWIM hopes its all down hill from here!

Re: kicking hydros..to taper or not to taper?
SWIM is now 1 week clean. Going back to school and away from his hydro connection was a sure-fire way to keep him from scoring! Now SWIM just has to decide what to do about his friend who brought back 90 of his mom's OCs

Re: kicking hydros..to taper or not to taper?
SWIM has knowledgeoh this and his/her doctor told them that as long as they were doing it the way they described they didnt see an addiction potential. The method as described? Try to take 2omg to make them last fail at this and take 60-80mg daily do this till they are gone then go cold turkey for about 1 month, so u end up with 60 days on 60mg 30days cold, this has been sustainable for yearly durations, but go into it knowing that,so i was told, the first week is a bummer with flu like symtoms and then about a week of your bowels getting reorganised.

Re: kicking hydros..to taper or not to taper?
I don't think I follow you. SWIM was using 60-120 mgs daily, and this doctor recommended that you take 60-80 mgs for 30 days until out of supply and then going without? That just sounds like classic cold turkey, and is basically what SWIM did. As a typically active person, it was not fun to be that sick for a week. But all in all, he doesn't regret his use over the summer and the highs were worth the withdrawls.
