SWIM just wants a benzo!

Not sure if this is the correct forum

Anyway.

SWIM has been prescribed benzos in the past, while the doctors knew SWIM had "drug problems" (had a period of coke abuse, and occasional marijuana use).

Anyway, SWIM had been going back to the doctor, and was prescribed Hydroxyzine for anxiety. A few days later (today) he made an 'emergency' appointment and said they didn't work and really needed something else.

The doc prescribed Buspar. I hear a lot of bad things with buspar, especially that it doesn't help anxiety! He mentioned how he used to be prescribed Valium and it worked great, but she said she didn't want to do that because it can be addicting and I have a history of drugs (hardly..)

All SWIM needs is a benzo... really. How can SWIM get it through their heads that he isn't abusing the benzo.. but it just plain works.

Who knows, maybe buspar will work.. he will give it a couple weeks maybe, then say it didn't help.

If SWIM gets real dizzy from buspar, what would their next course of action be? Aside from benzos, hydroxyzine and buspar... what else will docs prescribe for anxiety?

Re: SWIM just wants a benzo!

Lyrica (pregabalin) has recently been approved for the treatment of GAD in the EU. Not sure about the US. SWIY could discuss it with his doctor.

Re: SWIM just wants a benzo!

My advice is to go to a doctor that works in a different practice and doesn't have access to your previous medical history. When you see him pretend to be open minded and willing to try things. You can also make up a history about how hydroxyzine and buspar (i've been on both and yes buspar makes it feel like a sledge hammer has been taken to your head) have been ineffective. You can tell the doc how a low dose of alprazolam has done the trick for you before but be careful because xanax is known to be a fast acting benzo and doctors are afraid of giving you drugs that might have a "rush". Try having him start you on low dose clonazepam or lorazepam and work your way up from their. Always remember to establish a friendly relationship with your doctor where he feels comfortable about your character.

Re: SWIM just wants a benzo!

Well swim has had a drug addiction to opiates in the past and I had a doctor flat out refuse to prescribe me sleeping pills and benzo's. Swim needs both for generalized anxiety disorder that they tried to make swim take hydroxine for attacks and diphenhydramine for sleep, neither worked so swim went and found a new doctor and made no mention of past opiate abuse and now swim has a prescription for Alprazolam 0.5 4x a day and zolpidem for sleep and swim is doing just fine and not even abusing the medications.

Re: SWIM just wants a benzo!

You could explain that your history with drug use is behind you, and that right now the most important thing is that you can end the anxiety you are experiencing. Offer to take drug tests to prove that you are not abusing any illegal substances. I don't know if SWIY actually *is* still using illegal substances, but the offer of voluntary drug testing might convince her that you're not just a junkie who is med shopping. Chances are she won't ask you to take the drug tests, but even if she does there are very effective ways of getting around it that you can locate online (assuming she doesn't ask for a hair sample, that can be more tricky).

Re: SWIM just wants a benzo!

You could also find that doctors are rightly reluctant to prescribe benzodiazepines to those who need a constant effect to feel better. Benzo addiction is horrible and potentially fatal if left untreated should the supply be cut off (doctor gets in car-crash, etc.)

Talk therapy and other things are, by many accounts, more useful to one than a chemical bandage like a benzo.
