Re: Internet Addiction

been hopelessly addicted to world of warcraft for close to 5 years lost jobs friends
ive put on probably 100 pounds or more from the combo of siting on my computer for up to 16 hours a day seroquel( off that now tho) effexor and lamictal
being bipolar plus a few other things online games made me feel important and powerful when my real life felt so worthless but for about a year now i havnt been happy even in game it was just a mindless habbit and the ppl i played with were not happy and it started to have major effects on my bipolar cycles but then the other day i looked at my total play time 420 something days total over 5 years that just so messed up so i finally sucked it up and uninstalled starting school again in 4 weeks and i know if i was still playing wow i would totally mess up school and this is my last chance i feel like someone getting out of prison or something its exciting but also scary cus i dono what to do with myself but i started going to the gym and signed up for ju jitsu just gota keep me self outa the house as much as i can
sorry for the run on sentences little spazed out atm haha

Thanks for sharing your story - just shows how powerful addiction can be regardless of the source.

Re: Internet Addiction

There are some useful add-ons for Firefox that help to control internet addiction.

Self Control lets you make a list of sites that you waste time on, and then blocks them for whatever times of the day you want.

Timetracker makes a little stopwatch on the bottom of your Firefox window that shows how long you've been using Firefox. It stops counting when you minimise Firefox or when you are doing something else like using iTunes or whatever.

The trick is to have enough self control to use these add-ons though, heh. If you're really really addicted the only thing that works is a hammer through you computer screen. But they help anyway.

Re: Internet Addiction

SWIM is definately addicted to his net surfing and has been for a good 10 years (while regularly partaking in other activies/interests ofcourse) and feels this has a lot to do with living in a rundown inner city area with no car and no money for anything other that food, bills and ofcourse *legal* drugs.

When he steps outside all he sees are immigrants trying to get by on what they have, Working long hours at minimum wage just for the privilege of being here.
Junkies begging, stealing, fighting and selling the Big Issue (no offence anyone),
Elderly people who can barely walk but still go about their lives with a smile on their face, Which SWIM finds quite inspiring really. But a lot of young people don't share this level of respect and tend to harrass them.

It seems everyone living In this enviroment needs a distraction -
Family, alcohol, television and ofcourse the Internet.
