Side effects - Urinary Retention / Difficulty Urinating On DXM?

I have lost about 10 lbs due to lack of appetite. As well, DXM has caused me to have incredible trouble urinating when tripping (usually takes 6-10 hours to go away) and constipation?


Anyone have experienced same results?

LOL, funny, but I've never had this problem while on DXM. Maybe I'm just lucky I never have to go.

Cosign to the trouble pissing, and also when I finally do start pissing it feels like it is running down my legs (of course it is not).

Trouble "getting things moving" down there is a common side effect of
DXM I think, it happens with almost everyone I know who does it... I
wouldn't worry, unless it stays difficult to #1 or #2 for really long
after you've ended the trip.

I think dxm effects how you feel about certain things like eating and stuff.
I lost weight when i did it about 3-5 times a month and I also pretty much
quit drinking alcohol. Something about it just makes me think alcohols a
waste of time when I am frequently ( i say frequently only because i dont
usually do it that often) using dxm.

Interesting theory... I wonder if it's true (causing lack of appetite
and whatnot), because now that you mention it, when I do DXM often, I
too lose weight.



That might be because of the whole "DXM is better on an empty" stomache
thing, so I'm rarely eating as not to ruin the high in any form, but
who knows... I just don't feel hungry at all on DEX, maybe a little
urge to grab a cookie or a snack or something every now and then, but
overall I'm not hungry.

Hmmm makes me think, my last trip i ordered a pizza before the trip
started and once it did start the pizza came and i ate a slice and
didnt feel hungry anymore...thats a good thing to look into.

omg i tripped for the first time on dxm last night... i had to pee like every 5 minutes..but i'd dit there for like 10 minutes and NOTHING would fucking happen!!! ( well it sure did feel like 10 minutes.. who knows holw long i was really in there for.. haha..) ACK!! I was so fucked up... totally rocked!!!

I did 2 bottles of robo, when before my highest had been 1 bottle. I drank so much chaser and water , and when it peaked i had to pee like a mofo. I sat at bathroom for a good 5 minutes, nothing


Went to bed, it became so uncomf that i just went to the bathroom and with a fone in hand ready to dial 911 sat there

Ive read some reports on Erowid about people using DXM and not being able to urinate. I also sometimes have trouble with this. The last few times Ive used the next day I was unable to pee the entire morning and had to finally force myself to. I definately do not want to goto the hospital and get a cathitor inserted in me. So is there anyway around this as Im not wanting to do DXM anymore because of this. Trust me, once it happens to you it will scare the shit out of you not being able to take a piss no matter how hard you try. So any suggestions as opposed to just not doing DXM anymore?

I don't think there is anything you can do. I could be wrong. Drinking water won't help, it will make things worse. It will make you just want to urinate more and still be unable to. I always thought those reports where slightly exagerated because although I sometimes find it slightly more difficult to get it going I never was unable to completely, If this happened to me I guess I'd be pretty scared about it too. Hope others here can be more helpful than me on this subject.Edited by: RoboCop

I couldn't find any information on this, and it's apparently not a very
common problem. A lot of people I've heard about that couldn't
piss on DXM also took it in combination with some other drugs.
Diphenhydramine was a common one. I've heard of DXM possibly
causing kidney damage, but you'd have to be a pretty heavy user for
that to happen.



Another possibility that I can think of is that it might be a
psychological thing... like try to piss somewhere "inappropriate"; it's
very, very hard to do. Maybe something like that. I don't
know, just a thought.

I can't pee well on DXM either, and I always take DXM only (never
combo'd)... it takes a few minutes to get anything to come out.

Probably prostate swelling, for some reason or another. Taking an alpha-1 blocker might help.. not sure about the wisdom of the drug combination though.

I to also always had to piss very often when taking DXM, then gradually I had to push a bit but that wasnt a problem. The only time I ever could not piss was a few days ago. I wasnt taking any other drugs besides Xanax but I take that for anxiety and have always taken it while on DXM. Im thinking it was because I had used DXM the following 2 days beforehand. Stupid Idea to use so often, I know. I hope that was all it was.

I have been to the hospital because i couldnt pee on DXM, terrible experience.


Tips to avoid it: stay below 500 mg, dont redose.


Tips to help if ur stuck: Sit on the crapper for ~5 min just very relaxed (DONT DRINK MORE WATER, BECAUSE THIS UNABLE TO PEE CAN LAST UP TO 2 DAYS IF DONE IN VERY HIGH DOSES (STUPID ME!!) and you dont wanna waste precious water unless ur willing to get a tube stuck in ur dick... anyways


try to flex your abs, and imagine as if ur pushing all the liquid out thrupough ur abdominal muscles. Keep trying, i know its hard.


Then pour a cup or bowl of warm water, and soak your hand in it, and keep a running faucet *TRUST ME THESE HELP A LOT*


If nothing works, just drink sparingly, and try not to go to hospital, take it easy for a day (for 1-1.5 gram doses) and the next day you wont be normal (still trouble peeing) but you will b able to most likely

Swim took 500mg DXM by Robotussin DM a day for 3 days straight, then did 16 Coricidin HBP (skittles) every day afterwards for another 3 day period. The second day of skittles Swim noticed he had trouble peeing, and took a long time to urinate. It did not burn, but was hard to come out. Swim had to have water running and push for about 5 minutes. Will Swim's urination symptoms go away soon if he does no more DXM? Has Swim done too much DXM lately?

CPM (the other active in CCCs) has been known to cause difficulty urinating (as well as other nasty side effects, such as death). Using everyday would not have helped.
In future use a product containing DXM only and limit SWIYs use to once a fortnight or less.

His symptoms should go away if he lays off the medicine. Tell him that DXM isn't something one should do every day. Once a week is pushing it, but not too bad.

Swim tells me that sitting down helps when he has trouble going pee pee.

And stay away from Coricidin!!! It's poison.

swiy did way too much dxm for that amount of time. I take that much dxm in like a two month period.
