Bands like Shpongle

I'm looking for bands similar to shpongle. Any good ambient psy trance, preferrably with flutes like shpongle. The only band that compares is Spicelab.

Who here likes shpongle? Has anyone seen them live? Are you shpongled is the best goddam album...

Have you ever heard Banco de Gaia? They're pretty similar.

Re: Bands like Shpongle

They've got an album called Ten Years which is a compilation of a lot of their work that'd probably be a good introduction. CD1 is a quite dancy and CD2 is a lot more chilled.

A psychedelic trip isn't complete without shpongle on the peak. Divine moments of truth and Creset suns always bring out the most beautiful CEV's and OEV's with psychedelics for SWIM. It gave jungle CEV's when SWIM was on a high dose of 2C-E, a close ++++

IMHO nothing comes close to Spicelab. (lost in Spice)
Check out Fax records & Pete namlook. They have a lot, but there is some true gold in there. Fires of Ork is one of the good ones.
LSG (Like Spicelab; also Oliver Lieb) has some gold as well. Resistance D is very good.

Re: Bands like Shpongle

Shpongle is great..the group Entheogenic is one of the first in the psybient scene (along with Shpongle)..haven't got around to listening to them, but they're categorized the same as Shpongle so it's gotta be similar.

The 2 groups that come closest to Shpongle that I can think of are Entheogenic and Shulman. Neither really come close to matching the pure awesomeness of Shpongle IMO, but then again Shpongle sets the bar pretty high. I'll have to check out spicelab, not listed on itunes though - which means i have to wait to get a credit card to get it off amazon. Sometimes I wish I just listened to mainstream rock or rap; so much easier to find.

Oh and also, if you want more shpongle there will be a 4th album coming out at some point. Hope its the same quality of the other 3.

Hallucinogen-- a.k.a. Simon Posford-- was in Sphongle too. Their/ his best track was LSD.

Re: Bands like Shpongle

Saw shpongle at Glastonbury this year (although have seen Posford in many of his other guises too) and was truly mesmerised in the mud.

Anything that involves the man is worth checking out. Also worth checking out OTT (who has worked with Posford).

Saafi Brothers dish up some fairly chilled psy grooves, but again does not really compare with Shpongle.

Echo sentiments of Banco (check out Maya and Last Train to Lhasa).

You might want to check out BT. Great music and I've been a fan for them for a long time. Here is a track of theirs titled "Binary Universe" on youtube. The track doesn't really take off until about 4:00.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-duqsCFXxc

Sorry for the double post, but looking back on the thread BT fits a bit more into the IDM genre rather than the psy trance/goa which is what your looking for. Additionally, if your looking for flute based psy trance, then the best ones have been listed already (Spice Lab/Entheogenic). Juno Reactor might have some some of the sounds your looking for (some of their work has flutes/tribal instrumentals etc).

I've just discovered that Simon Potsford is also Younger Brother, which is more laid back and perhaps more sophisticated.

Mr Posford is a true legend. Founder and owner of Twisted records, he is also the main driving force behind Hallucinogen, Shpongle, Younger Brother, Celtic Cross and many, many more.

Re: Bands like Shpongle

Most of the rest of his aliases and collaborations only involve tracks, but here goes (with album ones first):

Mystery of the Yeti is another collaboration (also with Raja Ram of Shpongle and others) that involves full albums.
As does Dub Trees.
And AON.
The Infinity Project was another collaboration from the early nineties which sometimes had Posford on board (well worth checking out their two albums Feeling weird and Mystical Experiences anyway).

Other aliases for Posford are Gumbo and Walter Ego.

Other collaborations include:
Mandala, Purple Om, Fly Agaric, Anubis, Axis Mundi, Industrial Suicide Tribe, Infernal Machine, Twisted Allstars and others, but I'm sure that's enough to be going on with.

Re: Bands like Shpongle

There`s a great compilation by Raja Ram, The Mystery Of The Thirteen Crystal Skulls. Worth checking out.
And another one I really like is Abracadabra, by Idan Kupferberg, (HADSHOT HAHEIZAR records).
It`s the cd that most resembles Shpongle to me, but not quite the same.

Infected Mushroom is pretty good, might be worth checking out; similar to Shpongle; Salmonella Dub is another one with a similar vibe. Thievery Corporation is pretty good for electronica.
