Drugs in Europe vs America

Why is it that in europe certain drugs are more popular, and in the U.S different drugs take the prize? In europe extacy, amphetamines and pharmacuticals (benzo etc) seem to be the most common drugs that are used.

In the U.S drugs like crack and methamphetamine are much more common, along with powerful opiates like oxycontin. Heroin, cocaine and cannabis is probably equally widespread.

I think you can tell alot about the people in a country by their drugs of choice. Why do you think that we prefer different drugs in different parts of the world? Please write something about what drugs are mostly used in asia, africa, australia and any continent if you know anything about it.
