Least Drowzy Benzo
I need to know which Benzo causes the least drowsiness but still gives strong worthwhile effects. I'm currently interested in Valium or Xanax which most people recommend. I just don't want to be forced to fall asleep because whenever I take clozapine (clozaril, an antipsychotic) I end up passing out around 45 mins after I took the clozaril.

Re: Least Drowzy Benzo
Clonazepam almost seems stimulating at times and even in high doses it has not proved overwhelmingly sedating.

Re: Least Drowzy Benzo
SWIM finds the best way to combat the drowsy effects of benzos is to do something to keep the mind stimulated. For example, sitting in front of the TV is likely to make you nod off, whereas if SWIY is doing something creative or something that requires some thinking you are more likely to stay awake and enjoy the buzz.

Re: Least Drowzy Benzo
Valium is accompanied by horrible hangovers, for swim... swim experienced the least amount of drowsiness taking lorazepam, but the greatest effectiveness from taking alprazolam (xanax)

Re: Least Drowzy Benzo
My clone has always experienced a horrible hangover effect from xanax and temazepam, which are both short acting benzos. He has yet to try a longer acting benzo, but anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that short acting benzos are more likely to cause a hangover effect since they wear off during sleep.

Re: Least Drowzy Benzo
I agree with the previous post; the 'drowsy' effect wears off the longer a person uses a benzo. But changing from say, diazepam to alprazolam will cause the drowsy effect to start again - tolerance to this effect seems to be linked to which particular benzo you use. I know many people who enjoy the 'gouch' of benzos and will rotate their drug weekly or thereabouts.

Re: Least Drowzy Benzo
The reason the "drowsy" effect wears off is because tolerance to the different effects of benzodiazepines occurs at diffrent rates. It builds fastest to the hypnotic effect, but tolerance to the anticonvulsant and anxiolytic effects takes longer to develop

SWIG develops tolerance to the hypnotic / "drowsy" effect fast. So quick infact, that SWIG used to believe his medication was not working as he didn't feel drowsy any more. Though in SWIG's circumstance, the hypnotic tolerance falls just as quick as it builds. 2 or 3 days of Alprazolam use overcomes the drowsiness, a few days off of it and 0.5mg is enough to get the drowsy (but nice) feeling to return. |

Should also have said that the best brand of midazolam 15mg is FLORMIDAL, made by Galenika, and a lot cheaper than the Roche brand, DORMICUM.

Re: Least Drowzy Benzo
I actually missed out the answer to the original question in my last post. I have had extensive experience of benzos, having suffered an anxiety/panic syndrome for 30 years; I find that for daytime use the one which causes least drowsiness is clonazepam (Rivotril). On the other hand, when you are on a dosage of 6mg clonazepam daily, though the 'drowsy' effect wears off after the first couple of days' use, you have no problem getting a good night's sleep afterwards. After a couple of months on that dose you MIGHT need a hypnotic every few nights if, like me, you also have insomnia problems, and I find the best ones to be flunitrazepam 2mg, midazolam 15mg and temazepam 30mg. The 'Z' drugs lose their effect quite quickly, which is why things like zolpidem and zopiclone are recommended only for very short-term use. Any questions about benzos, you are welcome to direct them to me.
