Maybe we should stop using drugs?

There's this word that heavily disturbs me and has been doing so for a long time. It's the term "drugs". Wherever you put it in a sentence it almost always sounds about equal to "the worst evil thing on the planet".

What are "drugs" anyway? I'm not sure anymore, but wouldn't the correct term be "psychoactive drugs" in most cases where "drugs" are involved? A drug would be just about any commercial substance, right? Like paracetamol? Or diclofenac?

So sick of questions like: Are you on drugs? I'M NOT SURE, BUT WHY SHOULD I TELL YOU AND WHAT THE FUCK IS "DRUGS" ANYWAY?? GO FUCK YOURSELF WITH LOG OR SOMETHING, RETARD.

Got a little carried away here, but I'm very serious. It's like the word "drugs" is used as an excuse for not sharing relevant information, and it's everywhere all the time, for instance in newspapers and such. Often without an actual point.

Cannabis=drugs? No, cannabis=cannabis. Ice cream=food? No, ice cream=ice cream. See my point?

Anyone want to add any thoughts?

I don't have much to add but this same thing has been bugging me, too. Just the word drugs has the worst stigma attached to it..

I think a lot of people think drugs=mind-altering substance..well then a whoooole bunch of things not commonly viewed as "drugs" fall under that category. Hell, sugar can be a drug..it's addictive, and alters chemicals in the body..sooo...

True. This has been covered before. "Drugs" = "exogenous drugs." Or "drugs" = "illegal drugs". Or "drugs"="we no likey." Caffeine, nicotine, ethyl clcoho, alprazolam, diphenhydramine, and whackadickotine notwithstanding...

If I need a neutral term to discuss our tools of exploration, I often use "psychoactives". Referring to the specific psychoactive family works well, too... instead of "he took a drug", "he was under the effects of a psychedelic", or "he administered himself a dissociative".

I would agree, I think that people should say what the "drug" is, and rather than a drug maybe it should be called a "substance" when describing such a broad range of things.. huffing isn't a drug, nitrous is a substance... people should be more specific when they refer to "drugs"... like "Oh shit he does drugs?! OMG i can't be his friend, thanks for telling me" maybe the rebuttle is "but I only take ibuprofen sometimes".. but now someone lost a friend for no good reason

It not against the rules, but people tend to dislike it. Before posting in a thread with the last post older than 3-4 weeks, one should seriously consider if they are adding anything important to it. However, when one has something important to add to an old thread, it's very welcome to resurrect it.
