going from heroin to methadone

swim is trying to come off heroin which he has been doing for about 6 or 7 months. he just took 30mg of methadone (the kind u dissolve in water) and ,yea, it made him not as sick from not having heroin, but he thought it would at least give him some type of little buzz, which it did not. he used to be able to take like 10mg of methadone and get high, before he started heroin. now, 30 does nothing. is this normal? how much does he need to take to feel anything?
