Henbane Beer

I came across an interview the other day with ethnobotanist Christian Ratsch on the topic of Henbane Beer, or Pilsenkraut as it is known in its native tongue.

http://http://www.erowid.org/chemica...hol_brew.shtml

Does anyone have any experience with this? I had forestalled my interest in the nightshade plants in lieu of the supposed risks involved with their consumption, but now, the interest is almost irresistible...

Re: Henbane Beer

That actually does sound enticing. Sorry, I've no experience with henbane though. I tried mandrake root tea once that scared me away from other herbs that are similar in effect- I felt like I was going to have a heart attack; NO fun at all.

Well, at the end of the interview Ratsch refers to mandrake pilsen as well, saying that it can be made with a few variations to the henbane reciped. In fact, I find this possibility perhaps even more intriguing...

Indeed, one needs only substitute the same amount by weight of mandrake for the henbane. And mandrake root is, conveniently enough, available online...

I'm curious, what were some of the other effects of the above-mentioned mandrake tea? Ratsch warns that too much of it will make one hallucinate... perhaps the only reason I could bring myself to drink an alcoholic beverage!

Re: Henbane Beer

Please remember that these are very dangerous plants, that does not change by making a beer or tincture from it.
An interest or fascination of nightshades is best cultivated alongside the living plants themselves, not over a cup of tea.

I didn't notice any hallucinations, though I did feel very heavy and relaxed at first; but then it took a bad turn and my heart began to literally hurt. I seriously considered the idea that I was having a heart attack but I just rode it out. I don't recall how much root I used for the tea, but the simple answer is: TOO MUCH!! Do more research on it before you try it.
