Antibiotics and Ecstasy/MDMA

There has been many arguments on whether antibiotics are safe to combine with MDMA and for the most part it appears that it is safe. Many people have rolled sucessfully on various antibiotics.

The following antibiotics should be, theoretically, safe to combine with MDMA

azithromycin
bacitracin
cephalosporin, and forms of (cefepime, cephalexin)
ciprofloxacin
flucloxacillin
flucytosine
griseofulvin
isoniazid (used to treat TB)
minocycline*
moxifloxacin
neomycin
nitrofurantoin (but this may cause oxidative stress and so MDMA would be best avoided)
penicillin
polymyxin
streptomycin
sulfamethoxazole
trimethoprim

The following antibiotics have the potential to be dangerous, because they inhibit one of the enzymes (CYP34A) that breaks down MDMA. Thus, you should be cautious (consider taking a 1/2 dose of MDMA) if you are taking one of these antibiotics.

amoxicillin
clarithromycin
doxycycline (common acne med)
erythromycin
ketoconazole (but person experienced a very strong, long roll - proceed with caution!)
lansoprazole
primaquine
tetracycline
troleandomycin

I hope this information can help. That said many people have rolled on the antibiotics above that are listed as more dangerous with no problems.

Re: Antibiotics and Ecstasy/MDMA

Lymecycline, has the potential to be dangerous, because it inhibits one of the enzymes (CYP34A) that breaks down MDMA. It might be worth taking a weaker dose of MDMA. HOwever SWIF cannot tell you as he has no experience with that particular antibiotic.

It might also be worth considering whether its a good idea to roll anyway while your on an antibiotic as it's probably there to fight an infection

Re: Antibiotics and Ecstasy/MDMA

SWIM dosed with MDMA on the weekend approx 8 hours after taking a dose of Lymecycline (in the name of science ).

125mg + 40 mg at +1hr

(these are SWIMS personal experiences different people react differently to substances, so be warned SWIY'S reactions could be a lot more extreme)

The effects were not noticeably different but the comedown was longer and harsher than usual, SWIM normally just go's to sleep when coming down but this time SWIM could not sleep and found the whole experience quite scary.

SWIM had a bad head (not a head ache but brain pains) and abdominal cramps SWIM would not recommend rolling to anyone on these antibiotics.

The next day approx +31 hours after taking Lymecycline swim rolled again with 150 mg MDMA and experienced no adverse affects.

Re: Antibiotics and Ecstasy/MDMA

SWIM takes 500mg of Oxytetracycline twice a day, and has been for some time (since before he first tried MDMA). He assumes that this is one of the ones that inhibits CYP34A, due to the other tricyclic broad spectrum antibiotics listed. SWIM rarely has access to good MDMA (he avoids most pills due to uncertainty about the contents), but maybe the antibiotics give him worse comedowns than he should get. If SWIM stops taking oxytetracycline (SWIM's doctor has been trying to get SWIM to stop for some time anyway, and he may soon take SWIMS prescription away in an upcoming repeat prescription chck), how long should it take before it gets out of his system, and stops interacting with MDMA?

Re: Antibiotics and Ecstasy/MDMA

@honourableone - Give it 2 days if possible but IMO most of the antibiotic will be out in a shorter period than that. That said Im not sure what the antibiotic your taking is for, but firstly SWIY shouldnt be taking a broadspectrum antibiotic for a long period without good reason and also should not stop taking it if there is a good reason...

That is good to know.

An off topic answer to your concerns - SWIM used to have very bad acne for a long time, and switched between antibiotics untill he was put onto isotretinoin, which worked. The oxytetracycline was to prevent it coming back, though I don't know if it would now (years after the acne subsided), seeing has SWIM hasn't been in a situation where he has had to go without the antibiotics for some time. SWIM is just paranoid though - his father has always had a bad face, even though he is now 60, and acne had a very negative impact on SWIM's on his life. So I guess there is no "good reason" anymore, unless the problem would return after the course of antibiotics was stopped.
