Painkillers Stolen Downstate, Value Estimated At $80 Million

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- Authorities released details Tuesday about a stolen truck containing millions of painkillers, with an estimated value between $32 to $80 million, that was headed to Gurnee before it was taken from a downstate truck-stop.

WBBM's Steve Miller reports.

Authorities say the stolen drug, hydocodone aslo know as vicodin, has a street value of as much as $80 million.

About 16 million doses stolen were stolen from the truck on June 17th at a truck-stop near Troy, Ill., according to authorities. The truck was en route from California to a drug distributor in Gurnee.

Scott Collier of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says each dose is potentially worth $2 to $5 on the street. Street value: $32 million to $80 million.

His thoughts when he heard about the stolen truck?

"How extraordinary. And we were incredibly concerned."

Concerned because Collier says Chicago, St. Louis, Milwaukee, and other metropolitan areas are burgeoning black markets for hydrocodone.

I disagree with Tayo, the price wont go down , recently a ton of ephedrine was stolen from a business in that same part of the country and I didn't see or hear of any change in prices of meth, in fact someone would be hard pressed to have even gotten any meth that was made with the missing ephed , the only thing available is the crap that is made in Mexico, everyone I know hates the imported stuff, the best is made in home labs

Well, with ephedrine there is a synthesis factor to making meth, few people can do that, and it's also possible that the distribution will not be anywhere near Chicago. But you're right the price may not go down on meth because it will probably be sold as ephedrine.

That's like saying, "I didn't see the price of hydrocodone go down on the street because the precursor to hydrocodone was stolen."

Vicodin was like a huge waste of trouble and time to steal.Nowhere near worth the trouble unless these people were amatures,doubt anyone that would steal that much would be an amature though.This is rather odd,in most cases like this you hear of oxycontin or something worth stealing going missing.

That's it. They saw the opportunity and took it. Just because it's vicodin doesn't neglect the fact that it is worth 80 million dollars. Some guys are having quite the celebration right now, I would imagine.

SWIM doesn't think the thieves give a rat's ass about hydro not being as good as oxy. And - truth be told, SWIM prefers oxy over hydro, but if he met a dude in an overcoat with a giant jar of hydro he'll sell SWIM for cheap money, SWIM would pony up pretty quick. CWE is the magic equalizer.

Jesus Christ, 16 million doses. Someone's making a LOT of dough.

Swim really doesn't like hydrocodone.He isn't sure why but as he said before it makes him sick.It didn't use to when swim first started opiates which makes it all the more strange.Swim wonders if these people were stealing them for personal use or to sell?Swim doubts they were addicts,any serious opiate addict would have known and went for the good stuff before going after hydrocodone.

It might sound funny but at times in swims life even if he had say a few thousand methadone pills or oxy's he might not sell them.Not that swim is greedy but he was very obsessed in not only remaining high all the time but not even taking the chance of having to go through withdrawal.That might sound a little silly.Swim however is sure any other member here thats been heavily addicted to opiates will understand what he is trying to say.

But in reality with 16 million, they must've figured out they wouldn't be able to use that much, and if they're stealing they likely needed money, so they are selling them. Or they are dead from acetaminophen poisoning or caught because their water bill spiked and the feds caught on to the CWE process.
