Question Possible problems and interaction between cocaine use and SSRIs ?

Are there any associated problems using coke when on SSRIs?

Re: Cocaine and SSRIs

i dont think so. look it up though. cocaine's primary neurotransmitter target is dopamine, and SSRIs are for serotonin... possible mood lift? if it were something like a wellbutrin that works on dopamine it could be different

Re: Cocaine and SSRIs

will look into it. In the meantime, since swim is really not reference on SSRIs, will try forwarding this thread to the SSRI forum.

Re: Possible problems and interaction between cocaine use and SSRIs ?

Cocaine is a potent reuptake inhibitor of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin (mainly dopamine though). While SSRIs would most likely increase serotonin-related euphoria from cocaine (although the euphoria is mainly caused by dopamine reuptake inhibition), caution should be advised with large amounts of cocaine, binges or (worse) addiction with chronic use, as thes could cause serotonin syndrome (through significant serotonin reuptake inhibition).

Re: Possible problems and interaction between cocaine use and SSRIs ?

SWIM tried cocaine 4 times, 2 of which whilst taking an SSRI as well. Had no problems with it - they didn't appear to interact - also no come down. Swim took a little line each time. Bear in mind drug effects can vary a lot from person to person though!

I'm v. interested in getting info on interactions between prescription mood drugs and recreational drugs. can't find much info even on erowid. Anyone know where to look?

Re: Possible problems and interaction between cocaine use and SSRIs ?

They both lower the seizure threshold, which increases the risk exponentially rather than additively. Prior experience not required- the vast majority of grand mal seizures in adults are experienced by tonic clonic virgins.
