Firefighters inhaled ton of pot
[top] Firefighters inhaled as ton of pot burnedcnn EDINBURG, Texas (AP) -- Firefighters who spent half an hour fighting a blaze in which 2,000 pounds of marijuana went up in smoke breathed so much of it that they would have failed a drug test, a fire chief said. It took more than 35 firefighters, 1,000 gallons of water and five gallons of chemical suppressant to extinguish the warehouse blaze on Wednesday, Fire Chief Shawn Snider said. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were investigating the origin of the drugs. The Hidalgo County fire marshal was investigating whether arson was the cause. Snider said Thursday the firefighters were exposed to so much marijuana smoke that they would not be able to pass a drug test, despite wearing air packs to prevent them from inhaling toxic or hazardous fumes. ![]()

Re: Firefighters inhaled ton of pot
Fire them all and throw them in prison. That'll do the trick.

Re: Firefighters inhaled ton of pot
hehehe- Firefighter's are hero's, hell they deserve to get smoked-out in marijuana. Hell, they probably love marijuana plant burning jobs the best! LOL. I mean, think about all of the protective fume mask protection they have, you know they slipped them over a couple of times! OOOooops.

All swim can say is lucky them.
I am surprised they would fail a drug test considering they have protection from inhaling toxic or hazardous fumes Unless they took of their mask for a few seconds? Who wouldn't |

Re: Firefighters inhaled ton of pot
If nothing else that gives them a window of at least a few days that they wont have to worry about THC showing up on a drug test. They deserve to toke on their off time IMO (when they're not on call).

Yeah any smoke can be bad for your lungs but weed smoke is hardly damaging. |

If you did, you would know that the latest research has shown that smoked cannabis is not damaging the lungs or throat, in fact, it has shown that it may even be protective to some degree. Within the past couple of years, it has become more and more clear that cannabis just isn't injurious to the respiratory system. Not even one of the definitions found on this page suggests that cannabis is in any way toxic. |

yes there are studys that show that pot has anti-cancer properties and many other good things, but inhaling any kind of smoke is damaging to your lungs/throat.

Re: Firefighters inhaled ton of pot
I'd imagine though that all of the smoke and debris that could've found its way into the lungs of the firefighters would've been completely filtered out by their protective gear, though I'm oblivious to the extent to which this gear protects the user's breathing cavities.
Burning cannabis isn't going to be more dangerous than any other burning material that firefighters inevitably inhale on a daily basis. |

Re: Firefighters inhaled ton of pot
Since this is a warehouse wouldn't they have inhaled fumes from other things in the building that were non cannabis and most likely truly toxic?

Re: Firefighters inhaled ton of pot
o2 is flammable, and i don't think a firefighter would feel safe lugging a big canister of compressed gas into a fire (gas + heat = expansion). odds are, it is safer and cheaper for them just to use an air filter rather than an entirely separate breathing apparatus.
