How did you get addicted to opiates?

SWIM is not addicted to opioids or any other substance, and he doesn't think he ever will be...which is why he is asking this question. For those of SWIY's that are addicted...how did it happen? SWIM feels like he would see himself getting addicted to these substances long before it became a problem that he couldn't easily resolve on his own. As soon as he started noticing consistent withdrawal symptoms, SWIM would probably stop using...I ask because I don't think anyone ever really plans to get addicted or thinks they will, and so SWIM wants to see how it happened to others so he doesn't make the same mistakes.

Swim was kicked out of his house for the first time back in late 97.Swim was living with friends in this awful place infested with roaches that also happened to be well..haunted(swim doesn't want this to turn into a debate on the paranormal)anyways everyone there smoked weed everyday and that kind of thing.Well one night there was a party and a guy had a bottle of percocet.Well swim was on good terms with the guy so after the party and lots of people were crashed he shared some with swim.Just two and it was the best feeling swim had ever had.He didn't care that his family didn't want him,didn't care that he was living in a filthy place with no food.He had this warm and spinny feeling,it was a pleasure to just lay back and close his eyes and smile.The next morning the guy left but he left swim with one percocet.

Swim moved back in his family in about Feburary of 98.Bizzarely enough right when he came back his dad had a kidney stone and had a bottle of his beloved percocets!Swim can remember his joy seeing the bottle!That night he took two and stayed in his chair watching South Park(this was when it first came out)smiling like a clown.

Ofcourse swim wasn't hooked as of yet and didn't take them daily,he didn't want to risk being kicked out again afterall.A few months passed and swim was going to a local community college.Swim met a guy and was casually discussing drugs.This guy said he knew where to get heroin..HEROIN!Ooooh swim knew this was the opiate of opiate,he loved hearing Lou Reed sing about it,he knew this substance was the warm oblivion swim always wanted and he had to have it.So he worked something out with the guy and met the guys cousin in the parking lot who was hooked on it and was selling it.Swim got a tiny little paper envelope.Right when he got home he opened it and snorted a little line of the brown powder.Oooh swim is feeling a little tired and a little fuzzy nothing extreme but nice.Over the course of the day swim finished the bag.Not as impressive as he wanted but oh how bright and pretty the sun streaming through his window was and oh how nice to lay down and dream.Swim was going for this again oh yes!

Swim hooked up with this guy a few more times but then swim met this guys supplier,this guy was hooked to and he wasn't exactly a "nice"guy.Always carried a pistol,even told swim that if he didnt pay him on time he might get a gun to his head but also told swim that if he did him right and he was ever sick he would come hook swim up with a free bag.So one lovely cold night in October swim was gonna buy a few bags and his supplier and a few friends were gonna come hang out in his room and get high with him.They show up and they have a nice new bag of hypodermics.Oh wow!This was what swim was wanting,the real deal.And he got the real deal,he watched fascinated as his supplier cooked up swims shot first,swim was the newbie afterall."Clench your fist"swim did as he was told,a nice little sting like at the doctors,swim really didnt like watching his blood go into the syringe but after a few seconds swim didn't care."Now just open your hand and relax."Oh yes swim closed his eyes.The world ahh every beautiful color swim had ever seen,every beautiful song he had ever heard,every warm embrace,every lovely Autumn harvest moon BEAUTY BEAUTY thats all there was.All the times swim had ever been hurt,the fact his girlfriend had recently left him,the fact heroin was quickly mattering more than college.None of that mattered,oh swim was going to feel like this the rest of his life if he could help it!

So swim quickly started fucking up in school,snorting h off his books and nodding out,selling his books for h,hell returning his Christmas presents for smack money.Actually stealing money out of the register in the school bookstore where he worked at the time.

Soon his family caught on and well they tried to stop things,kicked him out for awhile again but that was okay.Soon there was a large amount of oxycodone in the house.

Swim was surprisingly tapering off and never got much withdrawal though,it wasnt til about a few years later that swim discovered a lovely substance called methadone that hooked him worse than h could and showed him more pain than he thought possible and swim has been a junkie since and probably will be for the rest of his time on earth.

Darawk, Noone really plans on being addicited, but I don`t think you understand what the withdrawals are all about. Yes there is the obvious sickness, the fever and restless legs, etc...
But there is a mindfuck that it plays with the person as well. It tells you that its OK to take it becuase you are not addicted. It says that 5 days is long enough to wait, then months later it is 4 days , then 3 etc...
Not everyone will get addicted - but just be aware the the WD`s act inside your mind as well as inside your body. It masquerades as thoughts, your thoughts...and that`s why the frequency increases, which leads to addiction. You think you are making these thoughts and making these choices, but these thoughts are artificial and temporary. When waiting 5 days becomes a long time, that is one of those thoughts...but being aware of this might help people understand their bodies more and hopefully avoid addicition in the first place.

Darawk is making the same assumptions about withdrawals alot of people who have never been dependent on opiates make.It's pretty difficult to actually explain what withdrawal is to these types of people.It is like the feeling of opiates,difficult to ever put how wonderful it is into words.Withdrawals are the other end of the spectrum,difficult to put exactly what they are into words.Swim is fortunate this board has a few other people that understand exactly where he has been and what he goes through.

Wouldn't call swimself addicted... but swim likes to experiment, with all sorts of things. usually taking it to the max for about a month, and with everything else swim tried, cold turkey after a month was just fine... it was all mental but opiates were different and it's all physical... of course pain can lead to second thoughts and lead to relapse.. but anyway yeah during this month, last dose before cold turkey was something like 32mg dilaudid, 40mg o.c. 30mg morphine (something like that dont remember exactly) ... swim has never put a needle in arm. of things cold turkeyed, swim has never tried meth, heroin, crack, pcp... would never trust purity, has had swim's fun with, and cold turkeyed with no problems: coke, weed, alcohol, benzos, prescription amphetamines, ambien, psychedelics, street "mdma" a few times-but stopped trusting it, and a whole bunch of ethnobotanicals.

yeah, well also crack is whack, would never do that, and will never shoot anything up, and mdma, yeah dont trust it unless swim makes it swimself. if swim were to ever try heroin it would be insufflated or put in a capsule and swallowed, possibly with grapefruit juice. it's definitely easier to trust pharmaceutical companies than dealers, because often times dealers buy, and if they think it's pure, the dealer above them could have cut it... there are so many things that could go wrong... and what's the cutting agent... is it carcinogenic? etc. who knows whats being added to dilute the product.

SWIM's addiction began like that of SWIO.S. Basically he was spending most of his time with his buddy at college getting fucked up on whatever... College opened up a whole new realm of possibilities for experimentation, thus the experimentation began. One day SWIM and his friend were bored and his friend pulled out a bottle of percocet... only 4 1/2 pills. He gave SWIM 2 and took 2 1/2 himself. SWIM didn't know much about percocet at the time and always liked to read up on things before trying them. He took one pill, a little nervous to take 2 of something he'd never tried but within 10 minutes SWIM felt a sudden reassurance, so he took the 2nd pill. SWIM sat there with his friend and remembers saying over and over how good he felt... They had been playing around with coke, LSD, psilocybin, GHB, etc but SWIM had never felt euphoria like this. This was euphoria that seemed like perfection... a drug made just for SWIM. SWIM didn't use nicotine at the time but occasionally bummed a drag or two from his friend's cig when they were hanging out. These 2 percocet made SWIM feel this warm fuzzy feeling all over, sort of like a warm glow all over. When SWIM and his friend went to smoke a cig, SWIM's drag did not burn his throat like usual, but went down smooth as silk.

SWIM always remembered this experience, but never took another opiate for quite a while. Then basically a girl that SWIM had sort of an odd relationship with... well, SWIM loved her. But she liked to play games, SWIM and her hung out all the time as friends. Even though she originally asked SWIM out, at this point in time she didn't want a relationship. So, SWIM could not hide from his feelings, nor forget about her as they hung out all the time. The fact that they were pretty much best friends but not more just ate SWIM up inside. SWIM knew the best thing was to just get away from her and forget about her, but everytime he tried she'd call him up and lead him on just enough so that he couldn't say no, or would tell himself that he'd give it 'one last try'... This left an ache in SWIM's heart, anxiety that would not let up. SWIM remembers this unbearable feeling that would not let up... it was eating him up inside. SWIM had an unlimited supply of alprazolam (xanax), so went on an alprazolam/vodka cocktail for awhile which numbed the hurt for a few hours each evening.

SWIM had always read that the special property of heroin was that it not only killed physical pain, but emotional pain as well. SWIM got down on his knees one night and asked God to either take away his pain or give him heroin... The alcohol and benzos weren't cutting it, and basically SWIM went running for opiates hoping that they were his ticket... after all, they were supposed to kill emotional pain. SWIM had no way of getting heroin at this point but was able to get percocet, which did something strange to SWIM... They didn't just numb him for a few hours every night like the alcohol/benzo cocktails, but made him content, made him feel like everything was going to be ok, they filled the void and gave him hope. It was like a magic cure for the pain SWIM had been feeling. SWIM became dependant upon the percocet to cope with his feelings for the girl who he could not have nor get away from. Eventually, SWIM discovered oxycontin as being a much more efficient way of obtaining and using oxycodone. While SWIM was not yet addicted yet he would say, he was dependent upon them to cope.

Finally as time went on, the girl SWIM was in love with finally got out of his life when she was accepted to a college that was far enough away that the two of them could not easily hang out. SWIM discontinued his regular use of opiates for a little bit but had developed a certain fondness for the drugs... and continued to buy oxycontin when they were easily available. One day, a certain "hook-up" said they had a different kind of oxys... they turned out to be MS Contin (morphine) which SWIM eagerly tried. SWIM was not yet using a needle and the morphine wasn't nearly as enjoyable via either insufflation/orally, so SWIM would turn down the dealer when he had MS Contin(morphine). SWIM had been experiencing an excitement about getting the oxycontin (oxycodone). One day SWIM discovered that while he didn't really like the MS Contin (morphine) all that well, it kept him from wanting/craving oxycontin(oxycodone) when it was not available. So SWIM began buying morphine when the oxy was not available so he wouldn't sit around thinking about the oxycontin. SWIM always looks back at this as being as close to a defining point along his path to addiction as there was... And thus another addict was born.

Eventually SWIM would find better sources, teach himself to mainline the shit, etc. SWIM would skip school altogether or cut out early to go pick up drugs and his grades began to suffer... eventually getting him kicked out of college. After being kicked out of college, SWIM sat around feeling sorry for himself, living a shitty existance of low paying shit jobs that he frequently changed as it was hard to support a habit on minimum wage. SWIM would simply just not show up if withdrawl was too bad, and never go back. Eventually heroin started creeping into SWIM's town, and then flooded in. SWIM pretty much left all other opiates behind him as he began to use heroin and only heroin... it was surely cheaper than pharmaceutical opiates and a hell of a lot easier to inject. Wasted years of a life centered around procuring heroin would follow.

SWIM was 17 when he tried his first percocet, and now at 26 has his receptors constantly bathed in opiates, its just part of life. SWIM looks at the past years gone by, can't believe he is 26 now, can't believe that 9 years has really gone by, and all those years when he was pretty much your stereotypical street junkie. All that seems like a blur to SWIM. By now, all of the kids that SWIM considered his closest friends have moved away, except one. SWIM knows now that he is changed forever, and will never be free of the "ball and chain".

SWIM got her wisdom teeth out in '02 (no prior drug use of any kind) and was prescribed Vicoprofen for the pain - she was addicted by the end of the first prescription and still battles it to this day. Both of SWIMs parents are alcoholics so SWIM thinks (and has been told by psychiatrists) that that leads to offspring with similar addictive personalities (whether it's alcohol or otherwise). SWIM definitely believes she has an addictive personality which perhaps causes the susceptability to getting addicted instead of "just experimenting".

Swik started to sip sizzurp(Promethazine w/codein and Tussenex) with a couple friends of his. He loved it. Then he got a tooth pulled and was prescribed a bottle of Loratab 10's (The blue ones).He loved that too. But it all became a real addiction when he started Oxycontin. He could go forever without syrup or eating pills. But he was hooked right after the second OC. He snorted it and he never stopped. The feeling is so intense and care is so minimal that REALLY nothing in the world matters.Since then he has done Hydromophone and morphine but nothing compares to that damn OC. I hear people say how they are'nt addicted to drugs and they have tried things before. Not a real opiate. Don't try it. I mean something like oxycontin,morphine,hydromorphone or heroin. You will lose. It feels great, but you will lose. Coke rides heroin's dick. You don't get withdrawls from most any drug. But opiates will make you do them. First it's then it's or then it's . He used to sit around doing jellies (temazepam) to come down after being out clubbing. Til one day, one of the slightly older guys who SWwasn'tus all got our pills and trips through said "I wouldn't waste my time with that shit, try this -".

It was little squidgie pellets of opium to be chased off of tin foil.

Pretty clever and move on his part, because he soon had a good customer base of newly hooked opium addicts in their early twenties to sell to.

His supply soon ran out though (and indeed this was about 14 years ago and SWIM's never seen the stuff around here since), and he said "No - I can't get you any more of that I'm afraid. But I can sell you this - it's pretty much the same thing."

And he's then got an increasingly addicted customer base to sell smack to, with nowhere else to get it from but him (though obviously that didn't last long, as the scuzzy world of this city's heroin addiction soon opened up before them).

Takes a good long time to get properly habitted-up though. SWIM went through years of occasional use with increasing frequency before finally realising he was a full-on junkie about five years later. Been barely a day without ingesting opiates in some form now for the last seven years.

Occasionally he thinks, "I don't wanna be a junkie my whole life. I've got to start finding a way out." But mostly he just reckons that he greatly prefers a life with opiates in it to anything a life without them would have to offer.

Well swims story began at the end of feb 1997. swim got arrest jan 9 1997 with a possesion of cannibus cs7 controlled substance 7th degree lol, weak charge but was still scared of jail time or probation, so young and uneducated of the real problems of this long island town. he got a laywer that cost a grand of his cash, lucky he turned 18 the prior year and was able to hide from the parents he was arrested and all. well he finished court and judge throws him a a.c.o.d, pretty much its a deal, no jail time or probation if u stay cop free for 6 months swim accept! well that didn't work. lil over a month later swim young nothing can hurt me or touch me dumb ass tries some white powder his frined is cutting up, cocain? no his friend says dope! dope? heroin. swim is like let me try. friend cuts a nice lil line and swim sniff away. Wow thats all he thought then after the blunt that was a wrap! swims mind is like where u been my whole life! by june swim was an all out junkie he thought till his dealer turned friend turned him on to the needle. by july he is truly an all out junkie! swim lived a hard 4 years of on and off use longest run was year and half shortest was 12 days thanks to the long are of the law. in and about copping H in the worst hoods in ny to sleeping on the 6 train cuz swim has no place to sleep! he has been thru it all

Swim was addicted to xanax, went to rehab, met a girl who was an IV heroin user. They hit it off, and three months later, swim tried shooting dope. AFter that, it was a downward spiral. Swim had done heroin before, but only snorted it. After the needle, it felt that there was no turning back. Swim did heroin for a year and finally quit 2 1/2 months ago...

Hydrocodone...After the first pill, it just led to more. And from there it led to trying different opiods. He isn't really addicted anymore, but has had plenty of periods of decent length binges that have resulted in some mild-bad withdrawal, and his tolerance doesn't really ever go down. His favorite is still hydrocodone. The effects of opiods just appeal to him so much. More then any other type of chemical, even though he knows it's no good for him.

This was quite supprising to swim, as swim knows quite little of methadone. she only had to buy it to prevent going cold turkey from H.(on her last kick) But would of thought H being harder to kick. (physicaly, mentaly, and of course staying clean) Swim has heard of awful withdrawals that one can experience coming off methadone - nasty and last much longer, then lingers. Swim could really easily become addicted (if she were to take it) to methadone as her partner is now perscribed it as it has helped him kick H. Swims partenr had a much harder time to come off H ~ mentally .

Swims partner was useing H at 13yrs on occasions with friends, so he had experience, infact alot more experience than swim in all drugs! esp LSD..
When swim got her first flat/appartment with partner, in a new town, and starting college, the student life style came with it. Swim came home to a small gathering of friends & partner taking H and smoking weed. Atmosphere was great, and swim joined in.. After a great night of a really great feeling/buzz/high ~ high as hell! swim was dashing in the loo every so often throwin up. and decided that wasnt for swim. until years later when she tried it again (and wasnt sick, but enjoyed very much) with friends that had been hooked for years, 'hanging' with these guys swim became addicted, but slowly and on binges. swim from then on went from being addited to H, kicking it, and so on. a vicious circle. Swims now clean.

swim was in alot of pain due to her back, at this time about 5 years ago she hadnt had her condition diegnosed.

anyway swims boyfriends mum had a back problem and had some co-proxamols.
she gave swim one to help and within an hour swim was really sadated.
it was amazing, swim loved it, but for a while didnt think anything of it.. untill she came across the bottle in the medicine cabinate.
so swim started taking one every now and again, then 2 then she would take a whole strip, swim knows this was bad but at the same time it did help with the pain.

then swim got her own from the doctors and so started a long battle with opioids and doctors and addiction.

Heavy story. Sounds kinda like mine. The shit sneaks up on you so swift and nonchalant before you know it it's not a monkey it's king kong. Funny thing about it too is as long as your high you can tell ur self all night"I don't need this shit!. I can stop" Until the next day when you realize yo ass aint got anymore. Than it's more like damn! what im'a do? It's a beast. If you aint tried it than don't.

The good Doctors, were Swims first dealers. Hydros, Somas, Benzos for the anxiety of fear of oncoming pain. "Doctors treat symptoms not the causes". There job is to push pills. Just count the number of pharmacy reps the next time you are at the Doctor.

It started with oxycontin, SWIM would crush them up and either swallow of plug about 40mg every couple weeks. Soon SWIM was doing it once a week, then twice a week, up tot he point where it everyday. Then SWIM moved onto harder opiates like morphine and heroin. Before SWIM knew it he was shooting heroin several times a day. This all took place over about 5 years.

Swim has been there and this not the only way to go. It is the the only way not to go. Swim believes your thought process is scary. Help or hell thats the only way to go.
