DMT and Near Death Experiences?
DMT is produced naturally by the pineal gland in the brain and is thought to play a part in dreams. I've noticed a similarity between the effects of a +4 psychedelic experience and accounts of NDEs.
Is there a possibility that DMT's role in the human body is to act as the ultimate natural pain-killer? When the body thinks it's teetering on the edge of death, it floods the brain with the chemical in order to make the process easier? On some experiences with LSD and N20, SWIM has seen his life flash before his eyes and also being met with a glorious white light and the feeling of being watched over. |

Re: DMT and Near Death Experiences?
Rick Strassman in "The Spirit Molecule" talks at length about this type of phenomenon, particularly in chapter 2: "What DMT Is"... I'd assume you've probably already read it. The study of DMT as a possible spiritual molecule associated with near death experiences is still very new and there's not as much evidence for it yet as there is that it's produced during REM sleep... but yes, the hypothesis is that it's sort of a spiritual and emotional painkiller. When it's your time to cross over into another world, i.e. die, DMT may be produced by the brain to prepare you for it... it's certainly evident that DMT is a tool for efficient travel between realities or states of existence for many of the people who use it. Perhaps in your last moments it will cease to seem like you're really dying and start to seem more like you're just passing from one dream into another, thanks to DMT. The human spirit has ways to protect itself from the most trying phenomena that nature can muster.

Re: DMT and Near Death Experiences?
in TIHKAL, for 5-meo-dmt, Shulgin writes about his friend at a unknown high dose
(with an unknown but large amount, smoked) I observed the subject pass very quickly into an almost coma-like state. Within seconds his face became purple and his breathing stopped. I pounded his chest, and breathed for him, and he seemed to emerge in consciousness, with the comment, "This is absolute ecstasy." He stopped breathing a second time, and both heart massage and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation was provided. Again, he recovered and managed to maintain a continuing consciousness and achieve a partial recovery. In the awake condition he was increasingly lucid, but on closing his eyes he became possessed with, what he called, "The energy of terror." He could not sleep, as upon closing his eyes he felt threatened in a way he could not tolerate. Three days later, medical intervention with antipsychotic medication was provided, which allowed the recovery of an acceptable behavior pattern in a few more days. |

Re: DMT and Near Death Experiences?
Swim was in a car accident which included two very hard impacts. Swim has ingested DMT more than enough to know a rush of something which felt similar but shorter in duration was released in his brain during the 2nd impact.
