Heroin recovery in Dublin

Hi All,

I have just finished reading a book called the Miracle of Fatima Mansions by a guy called Shay Byrne. He fell into using brown in the lated 60s. Like most, he ended up behind bars. Shay finaly entered rehab in 1980 after he was nearly killed by a bunch ofpscyho's in Dublin's Fatima Manions flat complex.

Byrne's account of addiction, withdrawel and recovery is the best I've ever red. The guy certainly knows what he is talking about. Inspring stuff...recomended reading for all recovering users and their families.

Could anyone recomend another book?

Do you think you might be interested in writing it up for the book review forum? Likewise, you might find more literature of interest in there.

SWIM read Burroughs' (50th Anniversary Definitive ed.) Junky (sic) not long ago and found it a very good read, but perhaps questionable as "recovery-inspiration" material.

I have heard Heroin: A True Story of Drug Addiction, Hope and Triumph by
Julie O'Toole is a good read though I have not read it myself.
There was quite alot of publicity for it a few months ago.

Cheers!

I've also read Julie O'Toole's book, but to be honest I think The Miracle of Fatima Mansions is in another leaugue altogether. The guy writes beautifuly and he pull no punches when it comes to the harowing detail.

Most"recovery inspiration material"is written by scientologists, quacks, and other such people.Better to stay hooked than to give up swiy's free will to these fucks! And reallistically why quit? The real world will fuck swiy over worse than junk.

Re: Heroin recovery in Dublin

If swiy is interested in Irish books regarding Heroin and prison then check out "The Joy" by Paul Howard. Here's a copy and paste from the back of the book:

The Joy
Mountjoy Jail. The shocking, true story of life on the inside
by Paul Howard

One man's story of life in The Joy -- compulsive, chilling and frank. A no-holds-barred account of a criminal's time in the notorious Dublin prison, as revealed to journalist Paul Howard. This extraordinary life story tells it all.
The desperate lifestyle of a junkie; bullying and savage beatings among the prisoners; ingenious drug-smuggling ploys; the despairing cry for help of a failed suicide attempt. But alongside the pain there is humour -- from the hilarity of World Cup celebrations to the distraction of a beautiful aerobics teacher, from bingeing on altar wine to the shortest-ever "hunger strike".
The first ever glimpse of Mountjoy Prison -- from the inside. Illustrated with black & white photographs

Swim hasnt read it in a few years but it a decent read if swim remembers correctly.

Now that does look like a decent read and swim is going to do his best to locate it.
