Carisoprodol/Meprobamate: Similar to Barbiturates?
Sorry about all the Carisoprodol threads but SWIM couldnt find this in any other thread. SWIM read up that your body metabolizes Carisoprodol (Soma) into another substance called Meprobamate, which is what causes the hypnotic sedating effects. There is alot of comparisions to Meprobamate and Barbituates and SWIM was wondering if since Barbituates are very rarely perscribed in the US, Soma is the closest thing to them that is easier to get? How similar is taking a large dose of Soma (6~8 350mg pills) to taking Seconal or another barb?

Re: Carisoprodol and Meprobamate
Soma is definitely not a barbiturate. If it were doctors would not be so willing to prescribe it.Swim does not have all the pharmacology but he is sure carisoprodol is not a barbiturate.Swim knows very little about barbiturates because of the fact they are so hard to come by nowadays and swim really wouldn't want that much to do with them after what he's read about them.

Re: Carisoprodol/Meprobamate: Similar to Barbiturates?
SWIM was right, Soma does metabolize to a barbituate-like drug called meprobamate. SWIM thinks they do feel similar to barbituates- weaker than pentobarbital, but stronger than butalbital. To quantitate it, 4 Soma makes it difficult for SWIM to walk and talk. 5-6 really puts him out, with possible amnesia. Past 6 is pointless, you'll pass out. You can also overdose on Soma easily, resulting in convulsions and the like. It definately has many similar effects to barbs, but not entirely. It has a much different relaxation (more like a benzo relax) and a slightly narcotic euphoria- but overall its very similar.

from what I remember reading it breaks down to a chemical that has effects of and is closer to a benzo than a barb.

Agreed, 4 is a VERY strong for SWIM, and he is an experienced Soma user. Definately start with one or two, and work your way up.

Re: Carisoprodol/Meprobamate: Similar to Barbiturates?
Swim's bug-eyed bat enjoys one soma now and then, and when she is ready to sleep and is to stimulated (being nocturnal) she ingests two. It is not long before the bat is high and happy for an hour then she nicely curls upside down in her cave for a restful sleep. The bug-eyed bat does seem groggy in the morning, but she always is anyway (being nocturnal).

Out of curiosity, does your bat encounter shakiness in the morning? SWIM gets this after large carisoprodol ingestion the evening prior.

Yes, that bat does seem to be shaky in the morning and bug eyed. Still she insists on having her iced tea for her morning perk up. Sometimes she adds a tab of carisprodol to smooth things out. Ahhhhh the cycle, but she functions well. She's good.
