Opium Smoking

Recently, SWIM was given a beautiful opium pipe from Thailand. He was wondering how exactly one would go about smoking the opium in it. Would simply placing the opium in the bowl and using a lighter work? Because I've read that the point that opium needs to burn at is quite high.

If that doesn't work, how would it work? Holding the ball on say a wire over a candle or similar heat source until it smoked, and then placing it into the pipe, putting the cover over top the bowl and inhaling the smoke?
