SSRI's and Ecstasy use

Hi

Can anyone help? I take sertraline 50mg each day for depression and recently started taking 'e' does this increase the chance of me having a dangerous reaction?? Cos all the info ive seen says dont take pills if your on anti depressants?

First time i took half was ok then took another 2.5 and fine. Second time took whole one and went completely freezing and paranoid and then 10mins later fine.

Any advice appreciated.

Re: SSRI's and E use

The effects of the ecstasy (MDMA) are decreased dramatically by SSRI'S, if not completely blocked off.
After just a week of taking tramadol in which acts in certain ways as anti depresents, swim that weekend noticed a decrease in the e's magic. Not to mention one runs the risk of obtaining serotonin serotonin syndrome which is a consequence of excess serotonergic activity at central nervous system and peripheral serotonin receptors. MAIO's + e's are a no go!

thanks for your reply i didnt ask about MAIO'S, but assume its the same universally for all anti depressants.

I relize this, just inforcing MAIO's run a larger risk when mixed with e's.

Re: SSRI's and E use

There's a fair amount of info out there on SSRI's and MDMA combos, and sometimes it conflicts a bit but the bottom line is: it will probably work, it's probably not that dangerous, and it probably won't be as good as it would be for someone not on SSRIs. Notice the probablys, however, SWIM doesn't neccesarily recommend the combo, though it will probably be fine. SWIM used to have a girlfriend on paroxetine (paxil) who liked to roll occasionally, and the only effect the paroxetine seemed to have was she had a higher tolerance then the rest of us, otherwise it was fine.

Re: SSRI's and E use

SWIM has a lot of experience in this, not with Sertraline specifically. However a quick check shows that Sertraline is an SSRI. What this means to you is that MDMA usage when on Sertraline is about as safe as taking MDMA on it's own.

However, you will not get the same high. SSRI's bind to the same receptors in our brians that MDMA tries to act on. Think of it as 5 entances at the tube station, if your not on an SSRI all are open and it's rush city, if your on an SSRI only one is open and it takes more to get the same effect.

The flip side of this is a type of medication knows as an MAO inhibitor. Taking a pill while on MAO is pretty much the same as having a serious death wish. (Also taking an SSRI while on MAO will have much the same effect)

So your safe enough.

Re: SSRI's and E use

I have a quick question. I'm taking 40mg of prozac (fluoxetine) a day, if i were to stop taking that for 4-5 days prior to rolling for the first time, would the effects be a lot more prounounced. Basically what i'm asking is, is 4-5 days long enough for the prozac to be completely out of my system?

Re: SSRI's and E use

^^^ No it's not, SSRI's take weeks-months to clear the system.

And SWIY should think very carefully about WHY they're taking the SSRI in the first place, and whether it would be wise to stop at all (depression is no joke).

Bear in mind, also, that SSRI's often cause an unpleasant withdrawal syndrome, with rebound anxiety if stopped suddenly.

If SWIY wishes to stop their SSRI, they should consult their physician first and taper the dose carefully over a period of time.

SWIM would think that you might feel something, although 40mg is a high dose - double to what is normally prescribed.

Without lecturing SWIM would ask you to ask yourself why - it's easy to forget that sometimes. SWIM would also like to mention, again without trying to lecture, that messing with your serotonin levels when you have a condition that needs this medication is probably not a good idea.

Good night? Probably. But the after effects, particularly in people who need SSRI's such a prozac can be dangerous. In people who are prone to depression the come down that others describe as 'a bit blue' for a few days can be very dangerous - very bleak, very lonely and a feeling of hopelessness. SWIM has knows people prone to depression attempting suicide when it the worst of a come down.

Sorry if that sounds grim but it has been SWIMS experience.

No i know exactly what you mean, my dog's personal experience in psychadelic amphetamines (LSD, DOC) is that the day after he takes them he feels horrible, and the depression is completely dependent on how much of said chemical he ingests.

Re: SSRI's and E use

swim has had e's with a rabbit on an ssri and an nri (not sure what dose or drugs exactly). swim and his friend had one and a half pills, while swim found the effects noticable and the pills to give a decent experience, his rabbit friend only really experienced the speedy effects without as much of the euphoria.

Like others have said, swim has read that ssri's can reduce the effects of e.
