Two women say their cocktails were drugged at a Redmond bar, knocking them out, and one tested positive for the "date rape" drug Ecstasy, the Redmond/Deschutes County Crime Unit reported Saturday. As detectives hunt for the culprit, they urged others with information or who may have been a victim to contact police right away.

Detectives with the joint Redmond Police/Deschutes County Sheriff's Office unit received anonymous information Thursday that an unknown suspect may have drugged the cocktails of two female patrons at Redmond's Fireside Bar/Grill, said sheriff's Sgt. Michael Espinoza.
Detectives said the women reported feeling extremely intoxicated and became unconscious after consuming the alcoholic beverage.
Street Crimes Unit detectives later learned one of the women tested positive for the common "date rape" drug Ecstasy, which can be put in a drink without detection.
The detectives are following up on leads on a possible suspect and motive, and also asking anyone who may have had similar incidents to report their experiences as soon as possible.
They are urged to call Redmond police at xxx-xxxx or the Redmond/Deschutes Street Crimes Unit at xxx-xxxx If a report is urgent in nature, call 911 immediately, they said.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (http://www.drugabuse.gov/infofacts/ecstasy.html), MDMA (3,4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is a synthetic, psychoactive drug chemically similar to the stimulant methamphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline. Street names for MDMA include Ecstasy, Adam, XTC, hug, beans, and love drug. MDMA is an illegal drug that acts as both a stimulant and psychedelic, producing an energizing effect, as well as distortions in time and perception and enhanced enjoyment from tactile experiences.
MDMA exerts its primary effects in the brain on neurons that use the chemical serotonin to communicate with other neurons. The serotonin system plays an important role in regulating mood, aggression, sexual activity, sleep, and sensitivity to pain.
Research in animals indicates that MDMA is neurotoxic; whether or not this is also true in humans is currently an area of intense investigation. MDMA can also be dangerous to health and, on rare occasions, lethal.

Swim was unaware anyone was under the misconception that ecstasy was a date rape drug. The alleged victim passed out from 'being drugged with ecstasy' however the article even educates the reader to ecstasy being a stimulant. The blatant contradiction and obvious scapegoating of this chemical is very apparent and even the average uneduacated american idiot should be able to understand this is a plain ridiculous accusation.

I'd see ecstasy as an antidote to date raping with downers. Overall downers like GHB, rohypnol and other drugs that are labeled 'date rape drugs' will not work well in this regard if a stimulant like ecstasy is taken. OK, taken such combinations may get one quite horny, but thats another matter.

Ecstasy could be anything, but this time they said it was posted positive in a test. What if the girls took a few pills, got paranoid and made up this lie?

I don't think ecstasy can be put into a drink without detection - it'd probably float on top unless really proffessionally pressed and then it would sink to the bottom and may not disolve for some time, even then some of the pill dilutents will not be water soluble and will leave a sludge at the bottom of the glass. Both girls may have been given GHB but one girl tested positive for ecstasy which she probably took herself a few days before - GHB isn't detectable after a few hours.

Interestingly, if one were to 'store' urine for 6 months, the urine would spontaneously produce significant amounts of GHB....

I've only ever heard of ecstasy used as a date rape drug in fiction - Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho. It's strange how only one of the women tested positive, surely they both would have had they been drugged with ecstasy. Falling asleep soon afterwards doesn't seem very likely with ecstasy either. I reckon this was just another case of over-doing it on the old booze, thinking you're invincible, and then using ecstasy as a scapegoat just because it turned up in the drug test. Open and shut really. Unfortunately the spin really takes off with this kind of thing.

Also, I think MDMA neurotoxicity in humans has been well studied by this point, and showed to be rather minimal.

Understand that the media does not tell the truth because the truth can be boring. It would much rather attract more attention and a larger audience by heavy exaggeration and deception. Ecstacy may cause consensual sex, but that's as bad as it will ever get. I would guess that some women got STD's from a night of fun on Ecstacy, and when they found out they contracted the diseases, they told police they were raped because they were pissed off about it.
