Cannabis and asthma

Swim's experience with cannabis has been great but now he experiences that his asthma has gotten a lot worst. It is obvious that smoking is not good for the lungs so swim has decided that he will no longer be smoking joints, bongs or pipes anymore. Swim owns a volcano vaporizer and loves using it. Do you feel that swim could still enjoy using cannabis without any problems with his asthma? If swim is going to continue experience moderate to servere problems with his asthma even tho he using the volcano vaporizer, swim will have to stop using cannabis for good.

Re: Cannabis and asthma

SWIM had asthma in his teens requiring him to carry Asthalin tablets and a pump.
SWIM started smoking schwag weed, a lot of it, and would cough up hell every morning (yeah, peer pressure can make you continue doing stupid things).

After a year of smoking, SWIM's asthma is completely gone (cured?).
SWIM does not carry a pump or tablets even on vacation to cold, high-altitude places.

SWIM and his doctor (who went ballistic on hearing SWIM's old age 'medicine') both now believe the weed cured his asthma; its been 12 years.

SWIM suggests SWIY stick to vaporizers and see how it goes.

Re: Cannabis and asthma

Smoking cannabis from a bong put swim in the hospital.

His breathing was so bad that he thought that cannabis induced his asthma attack. Swim will never again smoke cannabis anymore. If vaporizing does the same then swim will quit using cannabis for good.

Re: Cannabis and asthma

I don't have asthma, but a few of my best friends do. Though I have no experience with vaporizers and they certainly may help, I generally advise asthmatics not to smoke pot. My asthmatic best friend smoked heavily for 6 months before having a string of scary-ass asthma attacks, and a slow road after quitting to restore the health damage. He felt weak for close to a year. Any kind of smoked drug is riskier for an asthmatic than it is for most people, so you might as well find a drug you can eat, drink, or possibly insufflate.

Agreed with JDreaming...

Swim is doing a little more reading on vaporizing cause truthfully swim really likes the effects of cannabis and for swim to give it up completely would really suck. But at the same time swim's health is more important and not worth the time to pay any visits to the hospital. As far as smoking goes, swim has decided that he will no longer be smoking anymore. Swim hasnt had any problems using the vaporizer yet and hopes for this to continue. Swim will be using a vaporizer a lot more. For the meantime swim is not going to be using cannabis cause swim is on enough medication right now and does not want for cannabis to interact with the other medication and screw up the healing process.

Life fucking sucks when you have asthma but what can you do? Just continue living life as it is. Sorry but swim will never be insufflate any drugs into swim's system. Swim would of course love to create recipes in making cannabis drink or eating it but swim has tried making a leary biscuit so many times and they all failed (probably because swim used a microwave) and swim's realized that if you want to drink or eat it, you need to use a lot of cannabis.

Re: Cannabis and asthma

OK first off. Cannabis has the effect of a bronchial dialator, NOT a bronchial constrictor. In english this means that even though SWIY smokes cannabis, the blood vessels and bronchioli (the things in your lungs that make air usable) in the lungs actually relax and take in more oxygen.. Coffee, tea, and other bronchial constrictors cause the tight feeling in your chest. Now having athsma (speel cheque) I know that when a really bad attack comes on, the anxiety of this alone can cause my chest to become tight. Now the actual smoke can be irratating, however SWIM does not smoke ALOT in one sitting. (I never saw the point of smoking out a room other than saying that you actually did it.) When Swim smokes they take a few hits of quality stuff and enjoy the buzz, and 10 mins later takes another hit and then waits like an hour or more, depends on the stress in life but sometimes SWIM doesn't have another hit for 3-4 hours.

Re: Cannabis and asthma

  • Swim wouldn't think marijuana was responsible for Swiy's asthma complications because More than 15 million Americans are affected by asthma. Smoking cannabis (The "raw drug" as the AMA called it) would be beneficial for 80% of them and add 30-60 million person-years in the aggregate of extended life to current asthmatics over presently legal toxic medicines such as the Theophylline prescribed to children.
  • "Taking a hit of marijuana has been known to stop a full blown asthma attack." Personal communication with Dr. Donald Tashkin, December 12, 1989 and December 1, 1997. The use of cannabis for asthmatics goes back thousands of years in literature. American doctors of the last century wrote glowing reports in medical papers that asthma sufferers of the world would "bless" Indian hemp (cannabis) all their lives.
The inhalation of cannabis smoke causes bronchial dilation lasting up to one hour. The bronchodilator effect of orally injested THC lasts up to six hours, but is not so powerful as smoking cannabis. THC aerosols are not as effective as smoking cannabis because aerosolized THC has an irritating effect on the air passages.
THC in a micoaerosol has proved to be up to 60 percent effective as a bronchodilator, with minimal mental effects and no parasympathetic effects. Other research demonstrates that THC defends against the encroachment of emphysema and suppresses coughing. Cannabis has been used sucessfully in the treatment of whooping cough.
Today, of the 16 million American asthma sufferers, only those living in California, Arizona and Nevada, with a doctor's recommendation can legally grow and use cannabis medicines, even though it is generally the most effective treatment for asthma.

Re: Cannabis and asthma

SWIM thinks that it all depends on how severe your asthma is. SWIM suffers from asthma which was inducded from some heavy bong use. However, SWIM's bong is a 4 foot tall triple percolator Phire bong. Now SWIM is on symbicort (a daily asthma inhaler); and exclusively does volcano. There have been no problems since switching over to the volcano.

However for SWIY's asthma problems it would be prudent to be careful with the temperature SWIY vape at. SWIM recommends 175-180C, and when you can easily do bags/hits then switch to a slightly higher temperature. The highest you should go would be 190.

Also, SWIM finds the fresher the herb for the volcano the better the experience. As a result, perhaps SWIY should try and keep your herb fresher longer? SWIM believes mason jars are a good choice, as are ziploc bags that are kept in the refrigerator while not in use.

Re: Cannabis and asthma

This is very interesting..an asthmatic friend always used to say that if he had a bad chest, he would smoke a hit of his weed and he would be relieved.

SWIM suffers from asthma quite badly, and really enjoys smoking cannabis. He smokes alot of tobacco, at least ten of his roll-ups a day. He doest want to cut weed out of his life as he enjoys it so much, more than alcohol. Its the smoking of the weed that is most enjoyable, the social aspect.

Would it make more sense to cut out smoking tobacco initially? He will continue to smoke weed with tobacco but not smoke tobacco without weed, and this wont make him smoke more weed, as he only likes to smoke out of a bong and there is a limited supply of funds and stash.

Re: Cannabis and asthma

Swim has asthma and keeps his inhaler with him at all time, swim sometimes smokes and hits the inhaler just to calm him self down. But not smoking any kinda papers is a good thing to try.

Re: Cannabis and asthma

SWIM suggests that if you smoke your herb and have asthma you should stop immediately. Smoking will aggravate your asthma. SWIY should switch to vaporizers.

Also, SWIM wonders what kind of inhalers SWIY is using. From SWIMS experience SWIM has a daily inhaler, and an emergency inhaler. SWIM has found that as long as he continues regular use of his daily inhaler there are no problems whatsoever with using a volcano vaporizer. However, SWIM has noticed that if he takes his daily inhaler and then smokes there can be some problems. SWIM has smoked 4-6 full chambers in a volcano and has not experienced any asthma problems.

Therefore, SWIM suggests that the daily inhaler should be used after vaping, never before.

Also, if SWIY is using their emergency inhaler to get through vaping you should stop and take a tolerance break. The emergency inhaler's effectives will diminish and should not be used to get through smoking. Then when you really need it, it won't work.

Re: Cannabis and asthma

there's no need to stop using cannabis, instead of smoking swiy should cook and make some chronic cookies or something =) that will help you asthma greatly because even vaporizers still aren't "healthy" (but they r the healthyest way to inhale THC)
