Combinations - Will hallucinogens work when taking Bupropion, Quetiapine, and Lithium

SWIM is currently prescribed Wellbutrin, Lithium, and Seroquel all of which he takes daily. When SWIM was only prescribed the lithium and seroquel, he tried to eat ecstacy. The result was a really weak roll with no strong peak, even after eating three pills. What SWIM wonders is if his medications will also counter-act LSD and mushrooms in the same way it did ecstacy, and if they will how long he would need to skip his medication before he could trip again. SWIM had bad luck with hallucinogens when he was taking zoloft and zyprexa, and doesn't want to waste anymore money experimenting. Thank you to anyone who has any information.

The only thing that would have a significant effect is the Seroquil. Seroquil has the complete opposite action most hallucinegens have on certain key serotonin receptors. Seroquil is great to end a trip quickly though. It more or less cancels out the bulk of the action of most pyschedelics.

Lithium can lead people who consume mushrooms to fall into a dissasociative fugue, where they totally forget their names and everything about themselves. It happenned to a friend of mine and was very bad, not sure if it applies to LSD, but swim wouldnt risk it.

SWIM takes small doses of seroquel and wellbutrin and has found them to have no significant effect on the length and intensity of his hallucinogenic trips, so far. Psilocybin worked the same way for SWIM that it did for SWIM's friends who were on no medications. However, SWIM has not yet tried LSD.

I have seen indications that Wellbutrin and Lithium increase the risks of seizure activity and psychosis when taking LSD. Here is a good resource on this subject:

My advice is that mushrooms tend to rarely cross-react with most medications, except for MAOIs and SSRIs, but I would be much more careful taking LSD if SWIY is on antidepressant/antipsychotic medications. Google search and otherwise poke around for info, there's a lot of anecdotal data about lithium/wellbutrin users having unusual "bad trip" experiences on acid.

Why is SWiB taking these meds & what dose? Apart from being a nasty combination to start with it would suggest a diagnosis of mood or personality disorder of some description (if it weren't for the Bupropion I'd say Bipolar - I'd hope no doc in their right mind, even in the States would prescribe Bupropion for someone with Bipolar) or possibly treatment resistant depression with anxiety.

Whatever, SWiY should question the use of psychedelics whilst being treated with a combination like this, & discontinuing meds for the sake of a trip is not an option that should be taken lightly - if there is a psychotic and/or manic illness involved the chances of rebound psychosis/manic episode from stopping medication is high, & is again increased by the addition of psychedelics. Wellbutrin has a short halflife, so withdrawal symptoms are likely going to an issue if discontinued - tripping on withdrawals is not going to be fun. Tripping if depressed can be therapeutic, with a good degree of self-awareness and/or luck. Without it depression can deepen post-trip, the chances of a bad trip can increase. Bear in mind also that SWiY seizure threshold may well be lowered by this combination, especially if hallucinogens are added. That is, if the hallucinogens work at all, which is dubious on that combination of meds.

Lithium by itself has indeed been reported to potentiate hallucinogens, although not in a good way, as well as decrease effects

Bear in mind that the doses of hallucinogen recommended for treating cluster headaches are often lower than recreational doses.

SWIM currently takes 150mg Wellbutrin XR, 50mg Seroquel, 450mg of Eskalith(time released Lithium twice a day, another 50mg of Seroquel,an extra instant release lithium 150mg capsule, ans 0.5mg of alprazolam twice a day as needed. SWIM would never go off his needs for a tiny little weekend trip, but SWIM does highly enjoy music festivals and would possible consided going off the meds for say a 6 day max and only if he was a lot of extra alprazolams around just in case. These are allo prescribed for Bi-Polar Type 1. I guess from what I've ready Wellbutrin is actually really good for treating bi-polar depression and has a very low rate of causing a manic episode in the patient.

I have read accounts from others that said that taking LSD while they were on lithium caused seizers

personally, i think if swim's bpd is bad enough that he is on 3 different meds for it, he should stay away from lsd and shrooms completely. (they can exacerbate pre-existing mental illnessess)

yeah uh, well amanitas should work, muscarinic receptors, but that might not be considered a psychedelic by many
