Perhaps this is a strange question, so SWIM will re-word it: Can excess dopamine cause drowsiness, i.e. through either dopamine reuptake inhibition or boosting brain dopamine levels?
P.S. SWIM does not mean people with ADHD or other such issues. Last edited by Bio-Cellular Enigma; 26-05-2007 at 20:11. |

Re: Can a stimulant cause drowsiness?
Does SWIY have a particular stimulant in mind?
Because SWIM recently tried a stimulant that (might have - he had been not sleeping much previously) caused some drowsiness. |

why is this in the research chemical forum?

Re: Can a stimulant cause drowsiness?
Dopamine plays an essentially stimulatory role (there are certain exceptions, : see, for example inhibition of glutamate in the frontal lobes) (and, like, this is an extremely complex system that can't be reduced to simple monoamine activity), but drowsiness is a common effect with dopamine agonists, and L-DOPA. Stimulants themselves tend to have an activating effect, probably related partially to release of noradrenaline/adrenaline ... but indeed, they can produce drowsiness, especially when extended tolerance develops.
Some people eventually end up actually taking them to sleep, and then they grow to need them to sleep. But it's never a complete adaptation -- sleep quality still plummets. |

Re: Can a stimulant cause drowsiness?
Because originally SWIM had in mind a well known SDRI, but decided to leave it out at the last minute as he felt the general question about dopamine was more important..
OK, given the forum SWIM's currently posting in: MDPV. Somebody SWIM knows dosed ~10mg and was fine, but soon dosed another ~10mg not too long after and started getting drowsy. Then he did around 30mg later (ostensibly after the first two doses had worn off), and got very drowsy indeed. |

Re: Can a stimulant cause drowsiness?
dopamine wouldnt always keep someone from getting drowsy, usually the "wide awake" feeling from most stimulants stems from their adrenergic ability, MDPV is almost solely dopanergic.

Re: Can a stimulant cause drowsiness?
yes, drowsiness with MDPV is a sign of either overdosing or significant tolerance. other reported physical symptoms of overdosing include lethargy, nausea / vomiting, hyperthermia, constrictive pressure headache, loss of physical coordination / consciousness and falling down.
suggestion: reduce the dose. |

Re: Can a stimulant cause drowsiness?
Drowsiness, although a paradoxical effect, is quite possible with a drug that sharply raises dopamine levels (like MDPV would).
You are familiar with the way each neuron fires dopamine towards the next one in the chain, and if enough dopamine activates the right receptors, the neuron activates. Each neuron also has a very different type of receptor, located on the "firing side". It's called an autoreceptor, and it does the exact opposite of what a normal receptor does. It turns off the neuron, instead of turning it on. Let's say person A has a very high amount of these autoreceptors, due to the genetic lottery. If that person takes a low dose of something like MDPV, they will experience the stimulating effect of increased dopamine levels. But if dopamine levels rise too high, they'll start to activate more of the autoreceptors, and the stimulating effect will disappear as neurons are turned off. Since different people have different genetic code, and autoreceptors are coded for based on each persons DNA, some people have more of them than others. This is why some people feel drowsy if they take a lot of amphetamine, or whatever. Some researchers think that autoreceptor malfunction is responsible for ADD in certain people. |

Re: Can a stimulant cause drowsiness?
BINGO! That's the one SWIM recently had the drowsiness effect with as well.
