Psychedelics and Loss of Motivation/Interest in Reality?

SWIM goes to a boarding school. After being suspected of smoking marijuana (GASP!), he is now currently being drug tested, and has to see a therapist, the whole bag of shenanigans. (Even sometimes attend NA meetings) After avoiding the therapist and generally not paying attention to him, he began talking to him about psychedelics. It turns out the therapist's job at the center at which he works is to treat and analyze people that have consumed far too many psychedelics in their lifetimes, or just a 'normal' amount.
He said that in most cases, the patients aren't insane, or schizophrenic, but generally have a loss of motivation in life and reality. He quickly added that this is only a small margin of psychedelic users, as he used to be one. Many have plenty of difficulty focusing, and some simply used psychedelics to justify living in an unpleasant reality. Many see tracers still, have bizarre thought patterns, and have difficulty relating to others. They trail off in mid-sentence to stare at something, and then snap out of their trance as if nothing had happened.

All that said, can anyone relate to these adverse effects of psychedelic drugs? Not necessarily the loss of empathy and all that, but perhaps a general loss of motivation and interest in life? To me, that seems contradictory almost, as LSD always makes SWIM feel interested in life and the world in general.
