Water Lungs

SWIM read on another website that it is harmful to use ice to cool down your smoke in a bong with an ice catcher. This person stated that he ended up going to the hospital to get his lungs pumped, due to water inside his lungs apparantely. This same person also states that the ice evaporates and goes inside your lungs, condenses inside your lungs resulting in water in your lungs.

Is this even possible?

What do you guys think of this or does anyone know anything about this?

Re: Water Lungs

SWIM has used ice alot without problems.

Based on simple chemistry the idea that the ice evaporates and condenses is hard to come to terms with considering things evaporate more when they heat up, not when they cool down. The ice will simply melt before it "sublimes" and then condenses into your lungs.

Maybe the cubes made the water splatter more and this person simply sucked up some water.

SWIM also likes to use ice whenever possible to cool down the smoke before entering the lungs and never had a problem with it, however this is the first time ive ever come across this subject and just wanted to see what your guy's point of view might be or what you think of this.

My theory is that as the smoke passes through the ice, it would probably also evaporate the ice somewhat taking the smoke and evaporated ice into your lungs and maybe it could condense inside your lungs. Thats probably how SWIM got water in their lungs and ended up in a hospital, if this story is indeed true.

I just dont really see that happening or find it kinda hard to believe, SWIM uses ice whenever possible and SWIM has never had a problem with that.

sounds pretty damn plausable to swim, although swim is no biologist.

Re: Water Lungs

Maybe its SWIM's terminology but what was being referred to were those little indentations on a bong normally around the bowl piece (not on the bowl itself) but it looks like someone pushed the glass in with their thumb, some bongs may have more than one of those indentations but it keeps the ice from falling into the water below & cools the smoke as it passes through as your inhaling.

Re: Water Lungs

the only way swim sees evaped water getting into lungs, is by swiy sucking up the evap gas, but.. I believe that it will condense before it even reaches the lungs, more speceificaly, in the mouth. swim isn't aware of average oral temperature, but maybe.

Re: Water Lungs

OK.... Logic. Ice= H2o in frozen state. As Ice evapoates into the air it changes to a gaseous state. (I.e> Oxygen and Hydrogen molecules) Breathing in these gaseous molecules does not cause the oxygen and hydrogen molecules to reform into H2O. You would simply be inhaling all of the molecules and expelling the ones your lungs can not use. However... If SWIY has a tendancy towards pnumonia fluid buildup then smoking can cause this to become accellerated. In SWIMS case SWIM is allergic to Cannabis and if swim smokes the better the quality the more fluid build up occours. This is NOT H2O however it is sputum being produced to attack the chemical that is causing the allergic reaction. Swim can however expell this fluid through a cough and be done with it. In, conclusion... It is physically impossible for evaporated water from an ice cube to reform chemically as water in your lungs. While your lungs are capable of performing miraculous feats of chemical transformation, they are not capable of reforming seperate Hydrogen and Oxygen atoms into H2o.

Re: Water Lungs

This is total BS. Ice and water are the same thing at different temps, and lungs are venting moisture with each exhalation. Ice would not change that. water in the lungs is from inhaling water or backing it up from your bloodstream. Maybe this person was drowning before the bonghit, or maybe he/she has congestive heart failure ?

Exactly. Breathe on something glass, or even into your cupped hands. See the moisture? Or how about on a cold day when you see your breath?

The most likely situation is that this persons lungs were irritated by the smoke, and produced more fluid to protect itself. As some other SWIY said, it is entirely likely that they probably contracted pneumonia or something similar

Swia found this very unlikely, unless like stated there were other causes behind it.

Re: Water Lungs

LMAO SWIM must have missed a post or 2 in this thread.. Im glad theres a sober OldFart round these parts to bring back logic and reality.

Water vapour is in the air we breathe every day, if using a pipe that passes smoke through water (in any form) then the air might contain more water vapour but not significantly. The "ice" relationship to the story is just silly, if anything the ice woul remove water vapour from the air, vapour condenses back to liquid on cool surfaces ie Ice ?

If a bong or water pipe has too much water in then one can find themselves mistakenly inhaling quantities of water instead of smoke, but this is due to the bubbles passing through the water causing splashes, then what does the body do? makes you cough, returning the water to SWIYs mouth, IF SWIY was unable for whatever reason to cough, then SWIMs got other serious problems he should be seeing thhe doc about

But if SWIY cant cough SWIY shouldnt be smoking or inhaling water......

SWIM seriously thinks that somewhere along the line this story has passed through many stoners and started of with "SWIMs mate yeah, well we were filling a bong with ice , he stole some , ate it , coughed and..... and...... where'd the spilff go?"

Re: Water Lungs

Ice cubes do not evaporate at any rate that would constitute a dangerous amount of water vapor. If they are evaporating, they are still in a cold environment, otherwise they would be melting and the evaporation would occur later. Besides, you inhale water vapor all the time. Have you ever drowned in the shower because of all the steam?

Seems like a spook story to SWIM.
