Hello all. SWIM needs some advice. SWIM has been abusing opiates for a few years now, it has only become a problem within the last few months. The problem is the damage done to my liver and kidneys due to the excessive amounts of acetaminophen that is accociated with the Percocets and Vicodins SWIM has been abusing. SWIM has been ingested over 4000mg (the maximum recc. dose) of acetaminophen (tylenol) daily for the last couple of days and it is finally taking its toll. SWIM kidneys and liver are in pain and acheing serverly. SWIM feared the worst, kidney failure, but was extremely happy with each coming urination (a sign that SWIM's kidneys are working and have not shut off.) Now SWIM views theirself in the recovery stage and has some questions that SWIM would GREATLY APPRECIATE if answered ASAP.
-Foremost, does Oxy or Hydro do damage do ones organs (liver, kidneys, etc) or is it just the acetaminophen causeing the damage? -Besides drinking a copious amount of water, what are other methods of rehabilitating and keeping SWIM's kidneys healthy? -Any other advice for SWIM Again, I greatly appreciate any advice and reccomendations, SWIM has been very scared the last few days but is finally feeling a bit relieved and is about to embark on the recovery process. Many thanks. |

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
Firstly, you should see a doctor! If Swiy is in that much pain your liver and kidney functions should at least be tested.
Stop taking any and all drugs immediately. If you can not get to a doctor right now, drink lots of water! Mild acetaminophen poisoning can be made less severe by taking some acetylcysteine (don't know the American brand name) It will lessen the pain you have in your liver. Be aware that liver failure might happen up to 24 hours after ingestion of an excess amount of acetaminophen. Look into Cold Water Extraction (can be found on the forum) Don't drink alcohol when you have taken anything that contains acetaminophen. Swim does not know what oxy or hydro does to the kidneys. It's very important you go see a doctor. |

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
Thank you very much for your advice and concern...seeing a doctor would extremely difficult however......how could SWIM explain to a pediatrician that SWIM ingested 5000 mg of acetaminophin in a single night? = /. The words "Suicide attempt", "Addict", or "Rehab" come to mind. SWIM has an important athletic season coming up. SWIM's family can not possibly find out about the drug use..SWIM is determined to kick this habit on SWIMs own. I don't know if you could relate...but please do your best to understand and give any advice you may have..
Again, I greatly apreciate your and any advice given to SWIM! |

it is best to be honest though because if you are in an emergency situation, the need to know becomes very important. there is an antidote for large amounts of aceto. it's called acetylcysteine but must be taken within 8 hours of ingestion for it to work best, but even after a couple days it is said to be of at least some benefit in preventing hepatoxicity. |

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
Are you underage? You say you are 18.
When did you take 5000 mg's of Acetaminophen? This worries Swim. Toxic doses of Acet. are highly variable, death (yes, death!) can already occure at a dose of 6000 mg. Swim does understand your problem, and can absolutely relate, but 'see a doctor' is definitely the best advice for harm reducement in your case. Swim can see you probably won't, so please read Swim's first post again and get yourself some acetylcysteine. |

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
Ask your doctor, SWIM. Please listen to what is being said to SWIM. And call the doctor. Be honest with him/her. Being poisoned is not something to fool around with. Period.

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
And remember that the doctor abides by Doctor-Patient Confidentiality. He will not tell anyone you don't want him to. Don't want to see your doctor anyways?
Go to a walk-in clinic. Noone will know you there. And they will help you. You sound too young to have a bad liver for the rest of your life, so please do go. And let us know what the doctor says. ![]() |

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
Dear BrandNizzle
I would urge you to see a doc too. It should' nt be impossible to find one you can trust. To be on the safe side tell him beforehand that you confide in his duty to confidentiality. Tell him that you ingested it without knowing what it was, or what the right dose should have been; tell him that you inadvertently drunk from the wrong bottle, or that you thought it was a vitamine, but go and see a doctor and he will prescribe you the right antidote after having ascertained your situation from the results of the appropriated exams and tests. Self medication , even if you can get hold of the correct substances, could irrimediabily worsen your situation . The fact that you urinate regularly is a good sign, but by itself don' t mean shit. You should ask yourself: Is the amount of urine sufficient in relation to the liquids you ingest? What colour is it? (Dark, light, brownish) Is it transparent or torbid ? Does it contain solid residual substances? Do you know that the appearence of feces is as important as that of urine? How is the white of your eyes? Yellowish? injected with blood? All these are indicators of the status of your kidneys and liver, but even if all these things seem regular at the moment, it would only mean that your condition is not acute; only the appropriated blood checks and urine tests could provide the answers needed for an appropriated therapy. The courage and resolution you are displaying in wanting to rely on your own resources do you honour, but still, do yourself a favourand go to see a doc. All my best VV. |

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
Several things can be done, definitely see a doctor and SWIM suggests these changes in diet to restore organ function and maximize health. SWIM is currently at the end of a nutrition course which SWIM LOVES! Here they are.....
1. Take high doses of Milk Thistle, the active ingredient Silymarin is a liver protectant. 2. For a month take a break from as many chemicals as possible, eat healthy, don't even think about fast-food, try to eat as many organic foods from the food pyramid as possible. 3. Avoid red meat, stick to lean white meats and eat foods like salmon and eat a whole lot of fiber, it will improve the function of the Gastrointestinal Tract, by helping food pass through easier and helps carry undigested food which is clinging to the walls of your g.i. tract. Improved digestion can enhance many aspects of health, 20-35 grams of fiber is suggested. 4. Eat a little bit of everything on the food pyramid, make sure you get all sorts of fruit and vegetables. 5. Don't over eat, as it stresses the liver to metabolize, and what it cannot metabolize will remain in the liver tissue longer as opposed to liver enzymes being overloaded. The liver can only produce a certain number of enzymes in a certain time. 6. No alcohol... if you must, choose vodka and say tonic water or cranberry juice is an acceptable chaser/mixer. 7. Exercise, walk a few miles a day, jog if you like or lift weights. 8. Along with fiber SWIM suggests buying a product called GT's Raw Kombucha. Kombucha contains live kombucha colonies with probiotic enzymes amino acids and many other good sources of nutrition. The live yeast cultures improve digestion by adding to your body's natural intestinal flora. And there is an amount of vinegar in it, which will help restore PH balance in your body. There is also a GT's Raw Kombucha that is green in color, it contains chlorella and spirulina too, which are superfoods with very high nutrient density. 9. Take B Vitamin complexes once a day. 10. Make sure you add fish oil/omega-3 supplements to your diet too. 11. Avoid ingredients that are hydrogenated, artificial sweeteners, made from concentrate, trans fats, and fortified foods. THIS SHOULD HELP! Give it a try! ![]() Let SWIM know if this is useful information. If SWIY follows this routine for a month, noticeable difference should occur! Good luck, feel better! ![]() Last edited by tayo; 30-06-2007 at 10:46. |

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
No, they don't. If SWIY performs a Cold-Water Extraction(a _GOOD_ CWE, not a shitty job - if you don't do it well you will still have acetaminophen in there) then it shouldn't cause any extra liver problems...although I don't know for sure about the kidneys. And like everyone else said, go see a doctor. There is a doctor-patient privilege, they can't tell your parents and they can't call the police. If you want, you can go to some random doctor, not your regular one, if you're worried about future relations with that doctor. The main point is: talk to someone who knows and who can actually help you.

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
Seeing as the OP hasn't been back since the date of his last post (5th April) we can only hope that he got to hospital & no lasting damage was done.
Any advice given is now good for general knowledge, but probably won't do the OP any good! Please take notice of post dates when replying. |

General knowledge is excellent though, right? SWIM thinks that this makes for a great database of information. Some users like to add to thing they feel are "missing" even if it is an old post, yet they are eager to share information to teach others. This way when the user searches because they have the same condition, it might pop up and they will not need to start a new thread. there is no doubt that even though the thread may not be fresh, it will still be read by those simply surfing the subject. Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
Acetylcysteine can be had by the pound for very cheap at a health food or bodybuilding shop. (need to go to the doc/pharm here in the EU with a recaipe and pay 10000% more for this "nasty" acetylated aminoacid, whilszt paracetamiol is ok for giving away your liver)

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
Note that it's only wise to self-medicate with oral acetylcysteine in case of minor paracetamol poisoning.
In case of severe paracetamol/acetaminophen poisoning a trip to the hospital for an IV dose of acetylcysteine is indispensable. |

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
Acetylcysteine is no substitute for being safe in the first place however - stay below the recommended dosage, do cold water extractions where necessary, avoid high doses of paracetomol/acetominophen.
Paracetomol overdoses need to be handled by professionals - blood levels (paracetomol, salicylate) need to be closely monitored, as does liver function in all instances, oxygen saturation & vital signs in general, depending on the severity of the overdose & length of time since overdose. This is not something to self-medicate or hope for the best . |

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
Swim od'd on (he thinks but only has a tox screen 4 days later for reference) xanax, morphine and tylenol 3. swim passed out in his appartment for three days. pressure on the femoral nerves in his legs led to nerve damage and muscle breakdown. the muscle fibres clogged swims' kidneys and the tylenol caused liver failure. when swim woke up he could not remember the previous week, could not walk, and was horrendously sick. swim called his doctor who came to his place and immediately called an ambulance. swims heart stopped in the er and he was ressuscitated. two months in hospital on dialysis and eight months of physio to learn to walk again. tylenol is a useless drug, it takes an hour to work and lasts an hour. it only exists because of opiate hysteria.

Re: I need some advice please..acetaminophen posioning
SWIM is fortunate to be alive. Glad he made it. Acetaminophen (paracetamol) is, indeed, an amazingly dangerous drug that takes many lives a year worldwide. But because it's over-the-counter, people tend to assume it's harmless. In my opinion - it should have a giant warning label affixed to each bottle and box.
Once again - glad SWIM made it. |
