What is useful to counter DXM side effects

I intended this as a compilation of useful things (mainly medicines, also other stuff) that might be useful to have around when one would be using DXM.

Listed products should be intended to prevent or alleviate side effects. I am especially interested in things to do to prevent hangovers, just for information (although SWIM never got hangovers from DXM).

SWIM has not used DXM since quite some time, but he got some things together that he will take with him if he'll ever take DXM again.

His few possible helpers:

Meclozine aka meclizine (30 mg). Antihistamine, antiemetic, antivertiginous. This seems like a good thing to fight or prevent multiple adverse effects (itching, urticaria and other allergic reactions; nausea and vomiting; ataxia and vertigo). It should also immensely help in persons with motion sickness who are more likely to develop nausea from DXM. Other antihistamines are also useful, but SWIM chose this one because theoretically it helps with many problems. SWIM has used this once when he felt mild itching and moderate to hard nausea. It helped quite good.

Diazepam (10 mg). Benzodiazepine, anxiolytic, sedative. May be of use when overstimulation occurs (fast heart, agitation, etc.) and if experiencing bad trips/panic attacks. Wouldn't be recommended in high amounts or with truly high doses of DXM (respiratory depression). SWIM has this available in tablet form (for oral administration). If a trip sitter is present, a injectable solution would be preferred if a panic attack gets really bad, because it acts much faster.

Enalapril (10 mg). ACE inhibitor, hypotensive, vasodilatator. SWIM has some high blood pressure, but keeps it in normal limits with 10 mg enalapril daily. Just in case, if blood pressure would rise to dangerous levels, another tablet of enalapril might be useful. Also for this reason, SWIM would always take his sphygmomanometer with him when doing DXM outside of the house (a sphygmomanometer measures blood pressure).

Deodorant. To prevent possible excessive sweating, although SWIM never sweated much on DXM. Might be especially useful in the summer.

Anything to add?

Re: What is useful to have on hand when using DXM

From SWIM's personal experience..

A bucket (and/or toilet).

A sitter (ok to have a friend tripping too if SWIY and SWIY's friend aren't taking a massive dose).

Some dramamine (notice the "some", taking too much would make SWIY sleepy, or have a whole different trip).

Other than that, which most people probably don't need, it's pretty smooth sailing.

SWIM says weed because that hightens her DXM trip, and significantly eases any nausea she might feel..she says she has never done DXM without weed..however, after seeing your other recent DXM posts..I understand that you might not find this useful as it would be considered a combination...still a must for SWIM!

Maybe some strong antioxidants? SWIM doesn't know if DXM causes any oxidative stress, but a good dose of antioxidants won't hurt.
Vitamin C(ascorbinic acid) would be the best option since it's the most available, a dose of 1000mg, available at most if not any healthstore is a good dose as a antioxidant, maybe other vitamins and minerals would be good as well? Any info on this ?

SWIM has always felt, especially after doing the dex a couple times in a month, that her immune system is effected. Headaches come easier, and she feels stuffy and sometimes nauseated for a few days after a trip, so SWIM thinks thats advice is good stuffs. She's about to run off and take a few vitamins right now.

Re: What is useful to have on hand when using DXM

Swim never uses dex without a small dose of diphenhydramine (25-50mg) and a 1/4tsp of citric acid. The dph prevents the robo itch and helps prevent vomiting; the citric acid makes the dex far easier on the GI tract. He's not sure why the citrus works, but it does. One could perhaps substitute ascorbic acid, or even plain old OJ.

He sometimes uses piracetam; he finds that it helps reduce DexAmnesia.

Re: What is useful to have on hand when using DXM

Diphenhydramine doesn't work so well for SWIM when he wants to keep the DXM in his stomach. On top of that, it changes the feeling the of the trip, says SWIM.

From now on SWIM will start using MJ due to its enhancing effects and antiemitic properties, but will be careful not to let things become overwhelming.

Swim has done DXM about a half dozen times (the last use about 6 months ago), and nearly every time he vomited. It never feels bad, vomiting on DXM, but SWIM knows it's something he can't let slide if he begins a DXM habit, as he doesn't want his esophagus to start wasting away because of a recreational substance.

Re: What is useful to have on hand when using DXM

Swim has also found that dph changes the character of the experience until it wears off. He definitely does not recommend taking more than 50mg - dph inhibits the reuptake of serotonin, much like an SSRI (little known fact: Prozac was derived from Benadryl). Too much Benadryl with his DXM has caused him to ride the vomit comet more than once.

Swim has had mixed experiences with DXM and cannabis. Most times, it's been a wonderful, euphoric experience. However, this mixture has also led to the only bad trips he has had on DXM (panic attacks, which is extremely out of character for him). However...come to think of it, each of the bad experiences has involved a benzo in some way (he was trying to come down to go to bed).

Funny that benzos can promote panic if used in the right way.

Re: What is useful to have on hand when using DXM

SWIM finds that diphenhydramine alters experiences and is not as useful as say, something like pepto bismol. Many may think that this would not match up well with liquid, but SWIM does not use this method for his dxm so swim wouldn't know. SWIM does know, however, that pepto bismol alleviates some "coming up" negative side effects of dxm such as naseau in powder form.

Re: What is useful to have on hand when using DXM

1. Fluids! Never forget to have them.
Dyhydration is very unpleasant and potentially harmful side effect of DXM. It comes fast and is nagging even with low doses of DXM. Keep water always at hand, juices too. (Maybe orange juice as a replacement for citric acid, as ECL suggested? Two problems would be solved at once).

2. Bananas - easy to chew and swallow when one is rather lacking appetite. Their nutritional value is high, they contain lots of Mg and K, vitamins too, mostly C and B6.

Any idea what fruit could be used as an addition to bananas, ie. filling most gaps in banana's nutritional potential?

3. Small amount of weak alcohol, no more than 1-2 glasses of red wine in Alf's case, as an alternative sedative and CNS depressant.

Since Alf is always caring to drink regulary and to eat too, his hangovers are quite mild. If compared to alcoholic hangovers, they are barely noticable. Doses: 525mg-555mg (8.xx/kg) + THC

Re: What is useful to have on hand when using DXM

Paracelsus (cool name BTW, took two toxicology classes just my first year), I'm assuming all 3 of those are prescription-only; are there any OTC meds or supplements you would recommend for similar results?

Also, Swim finds 25mg of benadryl is extremely useful for DXM itchiness. It doesn't even need to be pre-dosed; in Swim's experience, he doesn't take it unless the itchiness starts to come on. Then he downs one, and within 20ish mins it's all gone.

Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen (swim prefers this more) swim finds EXTREMELY useful in the DXM trip. He knows many people feel heat/burning (usually along with the itchiness) as well as pressure in the head/face. When discomfort begins, he takes 2 325mg advils, and it works like a freakin' charm. It seriously changes the character of the trip for the better, completely removing most discomfort or mild claustrophobic which sometimes occur.

Swim hasn't tried it, but his friend says 2 pepto-bismol works well once during comedown to avoid any stomach grumbling. Swim never gets nausea, perhaps it would be useful to take it earlier to the Swiy's of you who become nauseous?

Re: What is useful to have on hand when using DXM

SWIM likes to have some Diphenhydramine on hand.
He finds that it helps reduce nausea and also potentiates his trip.

If SWIM has no DPH then he uses Cetirizine antihistamines,
they also help potentiate SWIMs DXM.

Zyrtec is brand name cetirizine, right? Are you absolutely sure about this? Swim doesn't mean to doubt you, he just wasn't sure as to any mechanism through which newer antihistamines potentiate DXM?

Yeah Zyrtec is Cetirizine (hcl?) and helps inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes which break down DXM. (maybe DXO but swim thinks DXM)

Re: What is useful to counter DXM side effects

A good blend of curry, especially with fenugeek and asofoetida can be an excellent internal deoderant to keep that chemical smelling sweat at bay. eat the day before and a few hours before. Those two herbs can also be gelcapped and taken that way.

Ginger is an excellent antinausea and it doesn't cause chages to the tripp like DPH. Candied ginger is the easiest way to go.

Swim really wishes he knew what this medicine was that he took. it was just some sort of cherry flavored anti nausea medicine (not pepto). he only ever took it once, but that was the only thing that ever kept him from puking. granted he took a lot more than the recommended dose... just drank a few sips down.

Re: What is useful to counter DXM side effects

My friend has found that hydroxyzine (vistaril) seems to alleviate all the side effects that diphenhydramine (benydril) will, on top of feeling much cleaner, with none of the nasty side effects diphenhydramine can cause, helps a little with the nausea (I wouldn't count on it keeping you from puking for long though), helps if the trip gets bad or intense in a negative way, all in all I can see no downside to taking this with dxm other than maybe getting a little sleepy if you took too much.

In addition, while this isn't an alleviation of side effects, it should be noted that both diphenhydramine and hydroxyzine have the potential to intensify the trip by potentiating the dxm, be careful if you use either of these in excess with dxm!
