Does LSD cause schizophrenia-like effects in strong doses?

During SWIM's last, very unpleasent trip, on around 250ug he began exhibiting symptoms of schizophrenia, notably derailment and shizophasia in terms of though processes and speech. (This is possibly what triggered the bad trip, the thought of going insane.)

At one point, seeking refuge in a car during an outdoor trance party, he had the overwhelming fear that he'd killed his friend's cousin because of voices inside his head speaking in third person.

ie; he didn't think. "I killed her!" he thought "Yeah, he killed his best friend's cousin and that's how everyone found him, locked in a car"

Is this a common effect with LSD, I know that it was once used to mimic schizophrenia to better understand it, or is it something SWIM should be worried about as it's a bad omen of sorts, showing SWIM's susceptibility to uprooting a dormant schizophrenic condition?

Re: Does LSD cause schizophrenia-like effects in strong doses?

seems more like a panic reaction. just relax next time. If you have any family history of mental illness then DONT..

Also the more you worry about silly things its often comical on how they can turn into big things. IF You have any worries then dont take lsd if u knows its lsd that is.

Also revise Set and Setting, find out what those terms mean regarding psychedelics. May help.

Again, I must reiterate, LSD is not so much a schizophrenia inducing drug in the takers, but rather in those who haven't taken it. What you may be confusing for Schizophrenia may just be a heightend sense of being. But, if Swiy feels the opposite to be the case, Alicia made sveral good points.

Take a look at the "Nu-Weird and Fugue States" thread and tell me what you think.

If schizophrenia happens, then odds are it was bond to happen sooner or later. Too many people have tried to blame drugs like marijuana, lsd, mushrooms for their behaviors, it triggered something in the mind. I will agree that there are cases where the drug might have actually being a nuisance to a person, but dosage and purity of the substance should be considered too.

Swim wouldn't worry about it indicating a latent predisposition to schizophrenia. In swim's experience, fear of going and staying insane (forever!!) is a classic bad trip symptom. When swim and his friends did quite a bit of acid many years ago, almost everyone had been through it. Ditto the hospital scene in swiy's trip report, which swim found interesting and honest.

I think swiy's experience shows that a music festival is one of the worst places to do a stong acid trip.

Yeah, without a doubt. A 75 - 100ug dose is fine, I think. But when you get to the point where you can't function in a social situation properly, especially in an unpredictable environment, you're gonna be in a spot of trouble.

Re: Does LSD cause schizophrenia-like effects in strong doses?

Partys are swims favorit place to take lsd :P. However, this (as well as swim's experiences) teaches us that one does has a rather big chance of getting paranoid around this many people when it's a strong blotter . (swim never did more as one blotter at a party)

Swim also had moments where he was thinking 'this is going waaay to far for a party :P' even once where this was about the only thing he said during this trip, shouting 'this is way too much' .
As long as he keeps thinking, 'it's only lsd, the effects will be over soon' he is usually fine.

Problem with trying to convince himself was that SWIM's mind was no longer a refuge, it was just a barrage of random thoughts and images and it took every ounce of strength to mentally string together the cohesive thought that he was on drugs.

Sometimes its best to let and be defeated, it can be as well as an agonizing ordeal quite an education one. Not all bad trips as they call them are bad depends on how one looks at them.

AW: Does LSD cause schizophrenia-like effects in strong doses?

actually, to be honest with you, LSD puts you in a state of, technical seen, mental disorder anyway. it's your POV that decides if this is bad or not - usually it shouldnt, as it's self induced and it'll go over - but nonetheless, you are not in a normal mental state during a trip.

it could be called schizophrenic, as you see and hear things not there. howeverer, it's generally not a good idea to fight a trip back. this will most commonly worsen the "bad" trip, as the LSD won't let you be no matter how much you try. so, even if you're frightened, lay back, try to relax and accept the things that are coming the way they are.
