morning glory: washing with detergent

SWIM heard from several people that if you want to get rid of the toxic chemicals they coat morning glory seeds with, all you need to do is wash them in hot water with detergent. This doesn't make sense though considering there are numerous sites on the net that give you a much more complicated procedure involving petroleum ether, 100 proof or more alcohol, and a whole lotta waiting for liquids to evaporate. If it was as easy as just washing them with soap, why go through all this trouble.

Can anyone speak from experience, honestly saying that washing the seeds with detergent actually works?
