Question on Dosage/Damage

First off,

SWIM was thinking, he began to wonder on such things like damage to lets say the brain via certain substances.

Swim was curious if, lets use mdma for an example ( SWIM has no experience with such So please dont flame on that) Hypotheticly I and SWIM know MDMA can be dangerous and harmfull to the brain. His question is...Is it the actually dosage of any substance in mg,etc what ever form of measurment that does the damge aka having a certain amount of whatever substance it may be in your system or is it the side effects that are the harmfull parts of such usage.

For example say with DXM is it having 250mg's of it in your system that can be harmfull or is it the effect of those DXM molecules playing with your brain and giving you the trip.

We'll To boil down the question Is it the trip that is harmful or Is it the ammount of what ever you took?

Hope SWIM explained that well.
(This Is purely for scientific knowledge Neither SWIM or I enduldge in such activities.)

Re: Question on Dosage/Damage

You're asking an aweful lot of questions.

It all depends wether of not the substance in question is toxic or not and if so, what part of the body does it affect?
MDMA hasn't been proven as far as I'm aware but is generally accepted to be a neurotoxin in high doses. This doesn't mean you will be harmed simply for insufflating a massive great line.
The human body is very good at repairing its self.
THC is cytotoxic, this means it stops cell from replicating by interfering with the DNA within the cell.
There are many types of poisons and most work in very different ways.

Re: Question on Dosage/Damage

I think the OP was referring to wether a drug experience causes brain damage or just a certain amount of a neurotoxic drug.

Most drugs have complex mechanisms of action, so I don't think there's going to be a clear answer on this topic. I think in most cases both substance and effects cause brain damage. Damage to certain neurons can be due to both the toxicity of the molecule itself and the molecule's effect on them.

This varies greatly from drug to drug.

Re: Question on Dosage/Damage

Yes, while reviewing SWIMS statement it kind was unclear. SWIM was really just wondering on a broader scale and SWIM knows some substance are more toxic than others but thanks for you posts.

Re: Question on Dosage/Damage

I'd say the most common cause of damage is the body's response to neurochemicals.
In the case of MDxs it's the down regulation of neurotransmitters that cause long term damage after prolonged use.

Re: Question on Dosage/Damage

the therapeutic index is the ratio of toxic vs effective dose. some substances like MDMA have a narrow index and exhibit toxicity that is undeniably dose dependent.

others, like LSD have an incredibly wide TI.

inbetween lay miriads of compounds with altogether varying degrees of toxicity, potential or otherwise. anything that results in significantly increased formation of free radicals in the body will cause oxidative stress and damage to cell membranes. then, one has to factor in individual metabolic nuances, like given neurotransmitter levels or degree of their depletion, immune status and so on. complex question, no simple answer but keep in mind that you can indeed overdose on water, should enough be ingested.
