i've been chasing it with chiva (black tar) and want to know if anyone knows what damage it can do to the resp. system.

Pure opiate drugs (the naturals and some synthetics) are actually pretty safe to inhale. Black tar is a different story. Unfortunately there is a plethora of other substances present in most tar, and the difficulty of discerning the effects the various chemicals will have on the respiratory system is compounded by the fact that the composition of the substance--byproducts, cuts, etc--is not constant. You can expect most of the negative effects attributed to smoking something like unfiltered cigarettes to manifest themselves. Other than that, no definitive answer can be given without first determining the exact composition of the compound in question.
