Police Pose as UPS Drivers

By Maggie Breshears
PULLMAN, Wash. A police officer posing as a package delivery man arrested a Washington State University student who allegedly sent marijuana to himself.
United Parcel Service employees notified police after receiving a package that smelled like marijuana.Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers says investigation revealed the student was both sender and recipient, so U-P-S allowed the Quad Cities Drug Task Force to use one of its uniforms and vans.An officer posing as a U-P-S driver then delivered the package to the student, who was arrested for misdemeanor drug possession.Myers says the student would be facing felony charged if he had used the U-S Postal Service to send the dope to himself.
>>>Swim would have ask for his UPS ID card, which swim doubts the officer would have had one to show.

Not just because of the increased severity, but because the USPS has a dedicated "postal inspector" branch of licensed law enforcement officers. Similarly, stealing mail is MUCH more severe an infraction than stealing a UPS package.

Re: Police Pose as UPS Drivers

Yep. A UPS driver brought me a new computer one day. He held the box up, flat, at chest level and dropped it squarely on the floor in front of me. He started laughing and saying: "That's nothin'! Ya oughta se what we do to them down at the plant! Ahahahaha!" And then he saw the look in my eyes and ran away real fast. Sure enough - the computer was broken.

Maybe I'll start sending myself boxes full of wound-up and set alarm-clocks - packed in talcum-powder...Mark the sender as Anne Thrax.

Re: Police Pose as UPS Drivers

SWIM still thinks USPS for those in the US is the best bet because they need a warrant to open packages which means it is probably more trouble than it's worth as long as the dogs don't alert...

LOL! Isn't this a happy coincidence. The DEA deleivered my "Curb Your Enthusiasm" DVDs today.

It's a local courier firm.

Re: Police Pose as UPS Drivers

just a question:
why was the "student" sending dope to *himself*? was this all part of a clever plot to see if he'd get caught sending larger quantities?

Re: Police Pose as UPS Drivers

It's safer than carrying it onto a plane. SWIM could see said student picking up some herb on vacation and wanting to take it home. However, SWIM thinks the plane is a better option than any shipping company with something that smells that strongly! Dumb-ass thing to do, but SWIM can see the thought process behind it...

Re: Police Pose as UPS Drivers

I've toured a UPS plant and yes, they indeed do use very little care with the packages they handle. Some employees joked that they call themselves the "United Package Smashers," and after I observed a few unloaders, I could see why. Each package was barely taken off the stack before it was dropped to the conveyer belt below.

Re: Police Pose as UPS Drivers

This is why SWIY should always vacuum seal your pot before mailing it. Either that, or quadruple bag it with ziplock bags, making sure to squeeze all of the air out. This kid must have been simply careless.

I wonder if you could just fake 'fake pot' packaging like the stuff seen in High Times? You know, "It's not Weed! It's Od'Weeds mon!"
