Itching

Swim just wanted to know what Swiy does to alleviate codeine-induced itching. What's safe to take, and More importantly, what's not safe to take with codeine?

SWIM has noticed that when he doesn't scratch, the itching dissapear pretty quickly, also being naked or with few chothes reduces the itching a lot for SWIM.

Re: Itching

SWIM doesn't get it. SWIY wants to get rid of the itching??!! SWIM loves feeling all warm and itchy, but the more tolerant SWIM gets to opiates the less SWIM itches. Damn, you're lucky!

The itching doesn't bother me that much, I only really get it with high doses and I find it mildly distracting when i'm going for a sensory-deprivation feeling to try to induce a nod-like state. If I itch, I may move, and if I move, it ruins my sensory-deprivation feeling. To be honest, I didn't even realise that I itched on codeine until just the other day and I've been taking it for ages!

Don't use non-drowsy antihistamines, as they can interact dangerously with Codeine in recreational doses.

Use something tried and tested such as Diphenhydramine or Dimenhydrinate.

Hope this helps.

Re: Itching

Yeah, I thought I'd heard about that bad interaction. I though Diphenhydramine and Dimenhydrinate were for nausea. Do they help itching too? Is that "dramamine?". Is it safe to take a drowsy antihistamine with codeine though?

Re: Itching

They are for nausea as they are anti-emitics (not sure of spelling, there).

Diphen and Dimen are also used in allergy pills, and can effectively remove itching. I honestly do not know exactly how this is done, but I believe it's due to their anticholinergic (again, spelling in doubt) properties.

I think it is fairly safe to take drowsy, first-generation antihistamines with Codeine, but I'd advise that you lower your Codeine dose slightly the first time, and also never use the antihistamine above stated doses.

Also, naturally, I'd recommend you never in a million years take Codeine in doses above those given to you by your doctor.
