Question European Drug Cultured Movies

Hey, SWIM was just looking for a few suggestions from anyone fellow SWIMMERS on the forum. Basically SWIM likes movies that have something to do with drugs because it is fun to see how drug users, dealers etc. are portrayed and how directors deal with the theme. While SWIM has seen a few American ones and the obvious ones like Fear and Loathing and Drugstore Cowboy stand out for SWIM he has found some of the movies seem too cliché. Or else they just make stoners look like idiots haha

SWIM has seen the British ones too and has found them enjoyable but that is just due to the fact the british seem to do these type of movies pretty well.

Anyway (sorry this is going to be a long post) SWIM recently started discovering movies that were shot, produced etc. in Europe and they usually have subtitles too which doesn't bother SWIM. And SWIM has found these movies are more enjoyable, as they are either trippier or more realistic or disturbing

Two films SWIM enjoyed are Run Lola Run (not exactly about drug culture but to an extent drugs is a huge part of film, oh and the cartoon scenes are trippy) and Pusher (an excellent Danish movie about a drug dealer)

SWIM was wondering if you guys could recommend some more hidden treasures that are European drug movies, SWIM is sure their is lots he has never heard of and will never see (unless SWIY suggests), so give me the name of a film and I'll google it etc. to see what the reviews are like.

Oh and SWIM saw a German movie (98 % sure it was German lol) a few weeks back about a poet (teenager), who goes to a house to a brother and sister and they are all in a suicide club or something and the plan is to have a fun weekend and then kill themselves (the movie has some really philosophical poems in it which SWIM enjoyed). SWIM enjoyed this movie but can't remember the name if anyone knows let SWIM know please. Sorry for lack of details but SWIM is just hoping it might refresh someone’s memory who seen it

Anyway suggest some films for SWIM. All they need to be are European, have drugs as a theme but doesn't have to be main theme, dark and/or philosophical and basically just a good watch.

Thanks. And if SWIM enjoys the movie he will send all the good karma and best wishes your way he can

Re: European Drug cultured movies

I'll look for Europa films in my collection. But can I profer something harder to find? From Brazil - of all places? Pixote. Based on real situations. In fact the young "actor" in it was living what it shows - and was later murdered. Don't watch this one while tripping, folks.

Acid House

(I believe it is called). It can be downright disgusting. It is not as much fun as Trainspotting, but it is from the same makers.

One of the stories in the film is about a guy who takes acid, gets hit by lightning and exchanges minds with a baby.

If you liked this movie, you deffenatly need to see Pusher 2 & 3..

BTW. If you haven't noticed "Tonny" is played by Mads Mikkelsen. You know, the evil guy "Le Chiffre" in the new James Bond movie..

Other danish movies i'd reccomend, although not all are about drug dealing, but they are worth watching.. Involving guns, improvised explosives, bad heists, bank robbery's etc. But all done by people who generally have no clue what they are doing.. Really funny stuff! Also theres alot of the same cool actors that are in all the movies:

Bleeder
I kina spiser de hunde
Gamle mænd i nye biler

,also there are followups on these movies, or they follow ups to another one? I can't remember but some searching should do..

Nice that some people finally open their eyes, for the european film scene!
There's alot of bullshit comming out of Hollywood..

Re: European Drug cultured movies

Ex-drummer (2007) by the Belgian Koen Mortier. It's pretty disgusting, so don't come complaining afterwards.
De hel van Tanger (2006): true story of a trucker who goes to jail (innocently) after Maroccan police find a large quantity of drugs in his truck. (this is the most mainstream film in Swim's list)
Steve + Sky (2004): a weird story about love between an xtc-dealer and a prostitute.

French: Baise-moi (2000)
La Haine (1995)
The first one is sometimes described as porn, it is not (although there are some very explicit scenes), both movies deal with a class of people who don't have, or don't believe they have, a future. Both are violent. And fatalistic. Both are despised by many people, but in Swim's opinion they actually do a very good job in describing the lack of hope some people raised in poor banlieus (slums, ghetto's) have.

Re: European Drug cultured movies

Hey DUMB have you heard about Pearse Elliots new movie Shrooms, its in post production now so not much help to you at the moment:

"The latest film from the creator of Man About Dog and The Mighty Celt looks set to be a road trip with a difference.

Pearse Elliott’s third feature – which is due to begin filming early in 2006 - is about a group of Americans who visit Ireland to sample its magic mushrooms.

Elliott, who wrote Man About Dog and wrote and directed the Mighty Celt, said ‘Shrooms’ would be smart and exciting and was aimed at a young adult film-going audience.

He is hoping the film, which is backed by the Irish Film Board and the Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission, will break into the international movie market.

The non-linear story follows six Americans who travel into rural Ireland in search of Irish magic mushrooms because they’ve heard so much about them, he explained.

“When they take them, things begin to happen and you don’t really know whether it’s real or not,” he said.

The cast has yet to be confirmed, but will be made up of a mixture of American and Irish actors, while the crew will be home-grown, he said.

Despite describing the chance to direct high-calibre actors Robert Carlyle, Gillian Anderson and Ken Stott in The Mighty Celt as a superb experience, Elliott has handed the director’s mantle for Shrooms to Paddy Breathnach.

It is the second time Breathnach has directed a screenplay written by Elliott, after collaborating on the successful 2004 film Man About Dog.

“Because of the success of Man About Dog, it was a no-brainer to do another project that involved both of us.

“This is a bigger film than we’ve done before,” Elliott said.

“Man About Dog was a success here, and established itself on the Irish landscape.

“I want this film to be successful internationally,” Elliott said.

He said the production had been well supported by the Irish Film Board and the Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission.

“They have really set their stall out supporting talent here,” he said.

Man About Dog earned 10 Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTA) nominations while the Mighty Celt garnered Gillian Anderson the Best International Actress IFTA and was nominated for three other categories.

But Elliott said he was more concerned about getting people to see Shrooms than aiming for awards.

“I just want the punters to go and see this film,” he said.

Re: European Drug cultured movies

Human Traffic doesn't have much to do with cocaine really.

Its a flick about the clubbing scene in Wales (I think it was), that has a pretty descriptive account of Ecstasy, as well as spliff politics, comedowns, peaking, life in drug filled rave/club scene, and life in general. There is one scene filmed looking up through a glass table where they are cutting cocaine and then go to talking about how fucked they looked cause their pupils were huge.

Also, Benga might have seen this, but the movie L'Eau Froid is a very good film. It looks at French counter culture in the 60s I believe, and has one of the best scenes of chillum smoking ever. Don't think there are any copies available with subtitles yet though, so knowing French is handy.
