Swim's babies are growing up so fast He has four San Pedros which were propagated from foot long cuttings. All four of them grew roots and started a growth spurt about two months after they were placed on some sandy soil close to some bright light. Now, they are growing by a window under the sun.
Cacti are such interesting plants to watch. Swim has been recording their height, distance between rib peaks, and the depth of the node between the peaks. He came up with a way of calculating an estimate of the surface area and volume of the cactus with these parameters so that the growth rate could be understood better (a result of a restless night ). Swim's cacti are still rooting, so I believe the growth rates (1"/month in its first monthly growth spurt) he's seeing aren't like the growth rates of well-rooted San Pedros.
Are there any Trichocereus Species growers that would like to share some of their experience with the plants with me? Also, the tips coming in are about half the diameter of the rest of the column. Do you think these little tips are coming in because of the underdeveloped root system, or is it normal? These plants get plenty of sunlight and are fertilized.
BTW, if anyone is interested in how I estimate the volume and surface area, I could send you a scan of the papers. It might be interesting for those math-types out there. The final equations are simple enough yet accurate enough to be useful.
