Methadone doesn't exhibit very much cross tolerance with other opiates (In the sense that other opiates won't increase your tolerance much to methadone, however, methadone will increase your tolerance to a ridiculous level if used often). Consider yourself a newbie. 10 mg is a good first time, oral dose for methadone. When SWIM was an avid oxy user (high doses) 5mg could get him buzzed, and 20 mg could send him off his rocker, surprisingly.
