Making your own spice

for a couple reasons, mainly curiousity, i want to try to make my own spice. Assuming there is no "secret ingrediant" i have been told that all the ingrediants are readily available in the U.S. Now, i dont know anything about mixing herbs, but i would love to learn. Do i need some sort of extraction techniques? etc. I have plenty of time on my hands, and if anybody can give me some info i would be very greatful. Thanks in advance!
