Downers which do not cause respiratory depression.

Basically everyone known that downers shouldn't be mixed one with another. This happens mainly because of respiratory depression. Benzodiazepines, barbiturates, opiates, atropine and other tropanes (except cocaine), ethanol, GHB and cousins, and many other drugs with sedative effects have depressant action on respiration.

What I want to know is which sedatives do NOT cause respiratory depression.

Cannabis is an example of a drug with sedative properties which doesn't cause respiratory depression. I've also heard of hops and kava kava as downers which don't cause respiratory depression.

Anything else?

Apparently talidomide also had this properties but we all know the negative side-effects.

For SWIM cannabis is so unique on this that it can not be compared to anything else. Kava-Kava never had a dramatic sedating effect on him even when high doses were involved.

Re: Downers which do not cause respiratory depression.

GHB does not suppress the reticular activating center of the brain which controls respiration (unlike drugs like alcohol and Rohypnol). In fact, although GHB slows the respiratory rate, it deepens the respirations, so there is little change in blood oxygen content. Quote from "The Demonization of GHB"
