Apple pipe

SWIM lately has been using an apple to smoke, and he wants to continue doing that. He usually uses foil as the screen for an apple pipe, but he has read the whole thing on alzheymer's and aluminum connection, and doesn't want to smoke with foil anymore. What could he use as a screen instead of foil? He was thinking maybe putting a toothpick through the top after twisting off the stem. Any other ideas?
