Credit card arrest leads to cocaine bust

PINEVILLE - A Louisville man will serve seven and a half years in prison after being convicted of multiple charges including trafficking in cocaine and fleeing and eluding police.

On Feb. 5, Bell County Circuit Court Judge James L. Bowling sentenced Shawn Monta Bush, 33, of Louisville, to 7 1/2 years in prison after accepting Bush's Dec. 22 guilty plea to one count of trafficking in cocaine, a controlled substance, in connection with an April 28 incident. A second charge of being a persistent felony offender was dismissed.

Bush also pleaded guilty to additional charges of fleeing and eluding a police officer, trafficking in cocaine, a controlled substance, operating a motor vehicle under the influence, resisting arrest, criminal trespass, and disorderly conduct, all in connection with incidents occurring Aug. 15 in which he knowingly disobeyed Middlesboro Police Officer Barry Cowan's signal to stop, threatened Cowan with physical force, and unlawfully entered a residence while being chased by Cowan. Bush received five years in prison each on the fleeing/eluding and drug trafficking charges, 30 days in the Bell County Jail for driving under the influence, two sentences of 12 months in jail for resisting arrest and criminal trespass, and 90 days in jail for disorderly conduct, all to be served concurrently with the 7 1/2 year prison sentence for drug trafficking.

Bush was one of 16 defendants sentenced recently in Bell Circuit Court, including:

€ Caleb G. Ayers, 19, of S. 29th St., Middlesboro, sentenced Feb. 5 to serve five months in prison after pleading guilty Jan. 4 to one count of assault in the second degree and six months in the Bell County Jail after pleading guilty to one count of assault in the fourth degree, to be served concurrently, in connection with a May 6 incident in which he intentionally caused physical injury to Seth Oakes and Tiffany Poore by intentionally hitting them with a motor vehicle. The sentence was reduced to concurrent sentences of six months in jail, followed by five years of supervised probation. Ayers was originally charged with two counts of assault in the second degree.

€ Tony A. Marsee, 37, of Winchester Ave., Middlesboro, sentenced Feb. 5 to serve three concurrent sentences of four years in prison after pleading guilty Jan. 3 to one count each of fleeing or evading police, wanton endangerment, and operating a motor vehicle under license revocation/suspension, all in connection with Aug. 3 incidents in which he knowingly disobeyed Middlesboro Police Officer Barry Cowan's signals to stop and engaged in dangerous conduct by passing a vehicle on a double yellow line in a blind curve, nearly hitting two vehicles head on and forcing the vehicles to the side of the roadway. The concurrent sentences are to be served consecutively with a previous sentence in Bell County Circuit Court. Three additional charges of improper registration, failure to maintain insurance and possession of an open container all were dismissed.
€ Patricia Ann Partin, address listed as c/o Kentucky Correctional Institute for Women, Pewee Valley, was sentenced Jan. 31 to six years in prison for being a persistent felony offender and five years in prison for wanton endangerment after a jury found her guilty Jan. 18 of starting a fire on March 1 at the Bell County Jail, endangering several inmates and staff. The sentences are concurrent. An additional charge of criminal mischief was dismissed.

€ Adam Gaylor, 33, of Dalewood Road, Middlesboro, was sentenced Jan. 24 to five years in prison after pleading guilty Dec. 18 to trafficking in hydrocodone, a controlled substance, and to 12 months in prison after pleading guilty to trafficking in simulated controlled substances believed to contain morphine, all in connection with incidents occurring March 23. The sentences are concurrent. An additional charge of being a persistent felony offender was dismissed.

€ Willie L. Buis, 48, of E. Doncaster, Middlesboro, was sentenced Jan. 24 to four years in prison after pleading guilty Dec. 18 to trafficking in hydrocodone, a controlled substance, in connection with a May 24 incident. An additional charge of being a persistent felony offender was dismissed.

€ Russell Patterson, 21, of Englewood Road, Middlesboro, was sentenced Jan. 25 to 30 days in the Bell County Jail after pleading guilty Jan. 16 to possession of marijuana, in connection with a May 2 incident. Additional charges of possession of hydrocodone, a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and receiving stolen property all were dismissed.

€ Charlotte M. Bowman of LaFollette, Tenn., was sentenced Jan. 4 to two sentences of four years in prison after pleading guilty Nov. 17 to one count each of possession of cocaine, a controlled substance, and drug paraphernalia, and to 12 months in the Bell County Jail after pleading guilty to one count of possession of hydrocodone, a controlled substance, all in connection with March 15 incidents. All sentences are concurrent.

€ Herbert Ancle Shoffner, 49, of Back Valley, Speedwell, was sentenced Jan. 31 to five years in prison after pleading guilty Jan. 3 to burglary and three sentences of six months in the Bell County Jail after pleading guilty to one count each of criminal mischief, unlawful transaction with a minor and possession of burglary tools, all in connection with incidents occurring Aug. 3 in which he and K.E., a minor, entered and destroyed property belonging to Firehouse Video, 2219 Cumberland Ave., Middlesboro.

€ Jamie Michelle King, of Virginia Ave., Pineville, was sentenced Feb. 1 to three years in prison after pleading guilty Aug. 1 to possession of oxycodone, a controlled substance, and to 12 months in the Bell County Jail after pleading guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia, both in connection with incidents occurring Dec. 15. Sentences are concurrent. An additional sentence of public intoxication was dismissed.

€ Curtis M. Halcomb, 20, of Cumberland, was sentenced Jan. 31 to two sentences of 30 days in jail after pleading guilty Jan. 24 to one count each of operating a motor vehicle under the influence and receiving stolen property, to be served concurrently, both in connection with March 1 incidents, involving $1,093.89 worth of stolen Wal-Mart merchandise. An additional charge of failure to maintain insurance was dismissed.

€ Debra Patterson Minor, 49, of Highway 63, Cumberland Gap, Tenn., was sentenced Feb. 5 to five years in prison, reduced to five years' probation, after pleading guilty Dec. 18 to theft in connection with an incident in which she took $4,000 while working as a teller at Commercial Bank.

€ Melissa A. Shackles, 23, of Bellwood Road, Middlesboro, was sentenced Jan. 31 to 12 months in the Bell County Jail, reduced to 24 months' probation, after pleading guilty Jan. 24 to theft in connection with incidents occurring between Aug. 1 and Sept. 13 in which she took $3,008 in cash from her employer, Wal-Mart.

€ Matthew J. Roark, 27, of Coldiron, was sentenced Jan. 31 to 12 months in jail, reduced to 24 months' probation, after pleading guilty Jan. 25 to facilitation to commit theft by deception in connection with an April 10 incident involving an attempt to obtain $770.40 from J.R. Hoe & Sons, N. 19th St., Middlesboro, by presenting a falsified weigh ticket.

€ Brian Turner, 45, of Middlesboro, was sentenced Jan. 24 to three years in prison after pleading guilty Dec. 18 to trafficking in marijuana, a controlled substance, near Middlesboro High School, in connection with a Feb. 15 incident.

€ Jason Lee Laws, 30, of Exeter Ave., Middlesboro, was sentenced Jan. 24 to three years in prison after pleading guilty Dec. 18 to trafficking in hydrocodone, a controlled substance, in connection with a March 14 incident.
