SWIMs 5-HTP experiences…

SWIM first heard about 5-HTP when reading about ecstasy, SWIM bought a bottle before he rolled for the first time, figuring he would take a few in the days after the roll to try and prevent the supposed depression. Well SWIM did do this, he took around 100mgs a day for three days after the roll, never felt any depression, in fact didn’t even think that the comedown or days after were bad at all. So then SWIM had a pretty much full bottle of 5-HTP with no use, so he started to take 100mgs once and while to see if it effected him at all. Sometimes SWIM would feel no effects, but other times such as last night an hour or so after taking it SWIMs mood will suddenly improve, he will get a positive outlook on things and be generally more happy, he will also find himself looking in the mirror and thinking about how good looking he is, something SWIM usually does not do as he considers himself having below average confidence. SWIM will also find himself moving to music, again something he does not normally do when sober.

Now this is not something that is instantly noticeable, its not like SWIM takes then and then an hour later is like hey I fell great and SWIM would not describe it as a euphoria, it is sutle yet apparent. SWIM knows it is not a placebo effect, because last night he took them, then pretty much forgot he had taken anything and a hour or so later he just had a mood improvement and had not idea why, then about 10 mins later he realized he had taken some 5-HTP. SWIM is not too sure what to make of this, because surly it should take some time for the 5-HTP to convert into serotonin, and you should not notice a different within an hour, but SWIM def does. Has anyone else experienced this? SWIM should mention he is an anxious person, pretty sure he has GAD and is positive he has mild OCD but has not seen a doctor about this. Was not sure if this was the best forums to post this in, so mods please feel free to move it to a more appropriate forum.

SWIM once snorted 100mg of pure 5-HTP and smoked a bowl of weed. It was pretty intense!

5-HTP is pretty potent when it comes to boosting serotonin release. Effects (positive or negative) will vary according to individual response to higher levels of serotonin. If someone is slightly depressed effects are likely to be positive. In Swim's case taking 300mg 5-HTP with small dose of melatonin (3mg) will knock Swim out cold 2-3 hours later but melatonin on its own does nothing. Swim does not know if 5-HTP improves his mood but it makes him sleep and doesn't seem to hurt anything.

Re: SWIMs 5-HTP experiences…

Swim has had 5-htp many times and is pretty sure it isn't recreational. However it does seem to reduce depression and generally puts you in a better mood. It only worked after a few days (swim forgot dose) so it seemed that there were no immediate effects. But if anyone has depression (even mild or severe) it can be good. For swim, 5-htp seems to work better that st johns wort.

Swim believes 5-HTP therapeutic effects will only get noticed quickly by people who are genuinely depressed from serotonin depletion. Otherwise only side effects, or nothing at all if individual is already in a healthy mood, will be felt. Swim thinks side effects only occur when other drugs affected by serotonin levels or serotonin mediated brain chemistry are already present. Just Swim's guess, really.
