hashish cohesiveness

SWIM was wondering what gives hash a sticky consistency. Most pressed kif SWIM has seen is powdery and does not melt well. Yet SWIM has tried really quality hash that was gummy and not at all powdery.
Is the difference that :
(1) the resin is collected and scraped rather than pressed as kif,
(2) hash oil is added to make it stick,
(3) different qualities of weed account forvariations in texture,
(3) is pressed with heat and pressure (never worked for SWIM), or
(4) is it adulterated with a binder(s) ?
SWIM has always been curious and could not find any clear answer by reading.
