Talking The Grateful Dead

Where's all the Heads at? I did a search and could barely find any Dead threads. There seems to be little appreciation here.

What's your favorite "era?" Songs? Members? Shows? Got any good concert experiences? Do you collect shows? How many do you have? How'd you get into the Dead? Are you a fan of other jam (Phish, Umphrey's, moe., etc)? Bluegrass music? Does a good Dark Star "really hit the spot" when you're feeling down?

Re: The Grateful Dead

I always found the Grateful Dead and most hippie music rather boring,I'm more into goth and punk sorry. The only things good to come out of the sixties were The Doors,The Velvet Underground,The Stones, and Iggy Pop.

Re: The Grateful Dead

I to am a rather young Deadhead and it was the same way at bonnarro 06. It was Phil Lesh and Friends but its as close as we can get now. Every wednesday on a local radio sation, that I always have tuned in, they play from one to three hours of mostly live Dead shows. I started with my brothers albums Workingman's Dead, American Beauty and a lot fo Dick's Picks.

I am a big fan of jam bands. Phish is another of my all time favorite. I also go see The Allman Brothers Band every time they tour here. Theres to many good bands to list right now.

Bluegrass is also one of my favorite. I have had Bela Felck playing for a while now. I love to play my banjo and fiddle with my buddies around a fire.

Though the dead is ... well, dead. (remaining dead still plays some good shows, but the tour is no more as it was) ... swip is still a profesional lot kid at heart and attends tuns and tuns of other shows all year.

It's difficult to describe. A flurry of harmony, improvisation, love, sweat & tears, folk(ish) lyrics, some funky bass grooves, some keyboard hammering, some spacey guitars, all leading to a transcendental experience of being "unstuck" in space while listening to some jams that roll on and on and on.

If you know how to use torrents, I can show you were you can download some shows from (live shows are generally regarded as better than studio, because of the jam element that can be had at a good show). The Dead supports concert-taping and swapping as long as it's free. If you don't use torrents, there's a few websites you could stream (listen, but not download) shows at.

PM me if you are interested.

edit: I've been trying to finish a pictorial demonstrating where, and how, to download live shows from. Hopefully it'll get online soon in between my studying, inebriation, recreational reading, and my other shit that leaves me with little free time. I'll post a link when available.

Hmm I might upset a few people here Alicia but you aren't missing much. They are a highly overrated band. They are abit like glorified folk music, pretty boring even if one is stoned on every substance you can think of.The hippies were a rather ridiculous lot,it was a glorious day when punk came around and took music out of its sheer boredom.

Re: The Grateful Dead

10KLF is the festival. Last year we had Phil, Trey, SCI, KWI, KW, Umphrey's, MMW, Railroad Earth, Big Wu, Everyone Orchestra, Trampled by Turtles, among others.

This year, so far Bobby, Trey, Umphrey's, moe., Gov't, KW, TDB, DTB, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and Trampled by Turtles have been announced.

I thought about going and catching Bobby's show last night but I'll be seeing him this summer. I've never caught Bela yet, it's a shame. I caught 3x consecutive YMSB shows over NYE, which was epic as fuck. I'm hoping STS9 is invited to 10K this year.

Re: The Grateful Dead

SWIM's a new generation Grateful Dead fan. Sort of got into them by accident when a buddy lended him some CDs. They're possibly his favourite band now. They have some amazing albums: Live Dead, Anthem of the Sun, Workingman's, Terrapin etc. As far as improvisation goes, they were damn impressive.

As far as the whole bluegrass thing goes, SWIM likes it! In fact, he likes it a lot more than he initially expected. Old and in the Way is one of his favourite albums.

And does "Dark Star" hit the spot? Damn right it does.

SWIM needs to get more into jam bands actually. Currently he's getting into The Allman Brothers Band.

Re: The Grateful Dead

If you like bluegrass, check out the band Trampled by Turtles. It's probably time you start venturing into live show territory instead of studio releases. Get some of the Dick's Picks or Download Series albums, or if you use torrents and PM me, I can link you to some great sites that circulate live tapings.

As for jam bands go, the Dead defined the genra ... and helped organize a now HUGE sub culture of transiet phsychodelic dancers ....

swips favorite new jam bands are FLOWMOTION and Bid Island Shindig
flowmotion will get into like 45 minute improv rips at live shows that just drive you head wild, much like the new riders of the purple sage

Re: The Grateful Dead

I just listened to a few tracks from Flowmotion and Big Island Shindig. It's nice, I like!

I'm snagging a few shows from each of them right now. Some good fucking jammin' going on here this morning. I recently finally got listening to Sound Tribe Sector 9, after many recommended them to me. Many of the members have synthesizers next to them that they'll rip spacey jams on when they aren't playing their instruments. I imagine their live shows are epic.

Yeah swip was directly responsible for their cross over this year playing together at a few shows calling it the "BIG FLOW" ... actually booked them both for the first "BIG FLOW" at one of the shows swip helps organize.

Re: The Grateful Dead

SCI is an ever evolving and improving group in swip's opinion .. they actually swaped drummers with flowmotion last summer for a while ... and overall good peeps too. the smaller and more closenet west coast circuit shows are much better then bustaroo and more mainstream festival shows. // yes, here on the west coast the festival circuit is still very close to the vibe of the dead tour and rainbow gatherings all mixed together // In fact, on the west coast there are almost weekly BARTER FAIRS that are held in differant areas underground that is by word of mouth of family mostly that is the great atmousphere of a west coast festival without the draw of all the big bands and national ticket sales and advertising... and getting back on topic, you never seen a good jamband or especially SCI until you've seen them up close and personal where they are at some point playing for YOU .... in close crowds of just a few hundred or a thousand people these bands really shine and jam with you on a more personal level ... and they tend to do much longer improv jams and try new creative evolutions...

//swip gets off his pro west coast festival ciruit soapbox//

Seems like swim needs to move out west for a while. He has always wanted to be able to go to a lot more shows then he can now. He is always on JamBase.com and becomes sad to see all the great shows he is missing out on.

Re: The Grateful Dead

LoL orchid, did you ever go to a LIVE dead show? Have you ever been to a festival? Heard and experience the music and the trippy half hour imrpovs in the middle of already amazing songs? Truely talented musicians.

And "hippies were" implies that a past reference. Swip was at a show of over 45000 hippies LAST YEAR listening to some of the best music ever played for free and swip was GIVIN lsd and mushrooms and smoked pot all weekend with kind family. Were redlicolous, I think more like ARE amazing. Ya get that kind of turn up at a punk show? lol Oh yeah, there are punk stages as well as electonica domes at many to most of these festival too anymore.
