Re: Martial arts??
Kendo has always seemed very interesting to me but I can't find any good establishments that teach it around me and all the supplies, the armor, the bokken look rather pricy for me at the moment.

Re: Martial arts??
I'm more interested in Western Martial Arts to be honest, modes of combat many of which have long died out. I have no practical experience as there aren't many people that teach these lost arts but I'm interested in researching them a little bit more. They seem more appealing because they don't have such a spiritual element to them, I'm not a very spiritual guy you see, and it's good to learn about fight styles based closer to home. One little known Irish martial art, Bata or Irish stickfighting, is particularly interesting to me. SWIM needs to buy a shillelagh.
Aside from that, I've done a crash course in judo which showed me a couple of things. |

Well, freak when swia was a young naive girly thug she used to box with her cousin. Whiskey added to the anger and aggression and made knock outs sleep a little easier, she wore gum shields all the time no other protection thou it was fun at the time she only got knocked out once. She dont do that anymore well not with the whiskey anyway. ![]() Drunken' as in kung fu was is used but not with alcohol it is a deceptive style that looks like the person doing it is drunk in there motion of trick counters to confuse the attacker. |

Re: Martial arts??
Lol, a la Boxer Rebellion.
Swim did Tae Kwon Do for a few years when he was younger. He also practiced Kung-Fu fist fighting by sparring with his roommate for a year. He did a year of Bauguazhang Kung Fu as well, though the Tai Chi style training wasn't nearly as fun as sparring so he didn't continue with it. Thats about the extent of his training, which is a shame as he is more interested in it now than he was before. |

Re: Martial arts??
Well swim has been kick boxing since swim was 8 (21 now) swim studied muai thai for 5years, 9months of which in thailand 2005/2006 - Very tough but loved it!
Aswell as being a 2nd dan in kickboxing swim is also a blackbelt in judo which swim's been doing since swim was 11 and a brown in jujitsu which swim has also been doing since swim was 11. Started boxing when swim was 17 (mainly just for stamina). Swim has also trained in grappling and submission (wrestling). Since August 06 swim has been (amateur) cage fighting in essex, birmingham, bournemouth etc (with a record of 9 wins 1 loss) with dreams of going to UFC, Pride or MMA and doing it professionally. For swiy, i think muai thai will blend well with what swiy has already learnt. While some of the hand-to-hand combat swiy has learnt teaches discipline and finesse, muai thai will provide brute force power, and turn your limbs into concrete.....trust me! |

Re: Martial arts??
SWIM took Shito Ryu karate for a year or two before joining the Navy Reserves back in '83. He probably liked it about a 5 on a scale of 1-10. At least for beginners, getting in shape (calisthenics) was #1, learning to dance + choreography (quite literally, 'cept called kata) #2, and the actual martial aspects were a very distant third, maybe even fourth/fifth or lower on the priority scale. Perhaps that's the way it's done in that dojo or school of karate, but it didn't make the whole thing very enjoyable or necessarily even something a person could respect right off the bat. SWIM never did pick the karate lessons back up again.

Re: Martial arts??
It isn't necessary to talk about SWIM now, right?
I practiced ju-jitsu for three years on the first occasion when I was younger and four four years after a 3 -4 year break from the age of 15 - 19. I'm thinking of starting up again. It's a close contact martial art, the core of which involves throws and locks, but you do a bit of everything: kicks, punches, blocks, katas, weapons (bow staff, nunchucks, koche, knives, swords etc.). It really depends on the dojo. I You really start to feel the benefit from the middle belts (green, blue etc.) where you'll learn harder moves like sacrificial throws and you'll really start to push yourself physically. The one move around which many others are built is the O Goshi (spelling) which is a basic hip throw. I always found the simplest move: the Osoto Gari (again: spelling?) leg sweep one of the most useful moves. It is a very good way of achieving a natural high, I found. |

I have always wanted to learn Jeet Kune Do, "the style of no style", from watching those Bruce Lee movies so many times. Maybe on day the free time will be there

Martial arts.....
SWIM likes to compete against random dream characters at the Lucid Dojo. Yep, you heard right! SWIM likes to practice in his dreams. Google "lucid dojo" for more info. It works better when tripping but can be done while sober. ~Dark |

Re: Martial arts??
I have practiced Tae Kwon Do since I was 5, making it 13 years now. In addition I have become adept with a bo staff and have some hapkido experiance. I also enjoy doing some training exercises of boxing, but not the sport itself. This is mainly from not wishing to get hit in the brain, an organ i deem important.
