Allergic Reaction to LSD?

Questions:
1. Is there data that specifies why some people have an itching sensation due to Shroom/LSD use?
2. Is there a way to counter this safely?

I was thinking of Benadryl but that would only be useful depending on the actual cause of the itching. I did not want to suggest the mixing of any drugs with LSD/Shroom use unless it seemed like a viable option. Then of course research the safety in their mixing.

I am not them so my information is second hand but from what I gather:

This person has used Psilocybin and LSD a very few times (4 times) and of approximated normal doses.

Each time they have the negative side effects of itching.

They have a history of picking at their skin and feel itchy even without the psychedelic intake. To my knowledge they haven't used any other type of drug related to psychedelics to verify the consistency further.
I believe they have been tested for liver dysfunction due to the their pruritus fun. Their liver is a-ok.

They take Wellbutrin (I'm not sure of their dose) and Zoloft(150mg) on a daily basis.
Their itching precedes the inital use of Wellbutrin and Zoloft.

My inital guess was simply that their senses may be 'enhanced' or at least increased skin sensation which in turn amplifies the already existing itchy feel.

Thanks for any help.

SWIM read clarantyne counteracts the DXM itch, but has never heard of something to counteract an LSD itch, he has never heard of an LSD itch period.

Re: LSD - Itching - Is there a way to counter this?

Both LSD and Psilocybin cause histamine release, which could well result in itch (as well as snotty nose and runny eyes). SWIJ has encountered such with mushrooms, although not with LSD. If the itch is due to histamine then an anti-histamine would prevent it.

Zoloft is Sertraline (an SSRI) and Wellbutrin is Bupropion (which also has Serotonin Reuptake Inbibitory effects). SSRI's attenuate/nullify the effects of LSD, so SWIY is wasting their time (and LSD).

Doesn't sound like LSD has anything to do with it if they are always itchy. Maybe its an allergy of some type?

Re: LSD - Itching - Is there a way to counter this?

Few things I would try would be the antihistamines for a quick fix, maybe, but the fact that SWIY is itchy normaly may mean its something else, if I was itchy all the time, I would try a good moisturising soap, some vitamine E, and maybe switching to a hypoalergenic laundry detergent, it could also be a mild food alergy to something very common, have them write down everything they eat for a few weeks, and note any time they get itchy, hopefully a pattern will emerge and the person will be able to reduce or elliminate that food and feel much better all the time. As mentioned earlier, lsd and shroomies are amazing in their ability to increase perception of one's own body, and one can feel it's symptoms more, so it's probably not the lsd at all, but a sign that SWIY should look into the health of his/her skin and the possibility of alergies to common substances.

Hope this helps....

Swim had a Hayfever type reaction to LSD

Swim had his first hit of acid last weekend, it was very nice and swim really enjoyed it.

Two things bothered swim though, any thoughts?

1. Swims legs cramped up, vasoconstriction like the cramps with MG seeds swim has had before. Swims trip buddy also got this - Swim has never heard of this happening. Swim took some vit C before he tripped, his friend did not.

2. Swim had a Hayfever type reaction to his acid, about an hour after having his drops, swim started to feel 'stuffy' in his nose and sinus (swim has has sinusitis before (after snorting a line of pollen - dont ask.) and knows exactly what this feeling is.) Anyway, mid trip swim realises he can hardly breath, his nose is running badly and his sinus's feel really pressured. Swim also feels his throat swelling up. Swim was indoors at a friends house that he has been to many many times before so doubts is was a reaction to dog hair or carpet (alou swim did spend a while on the floor trying to work out of the patterns were infact real) Swims friend had no reaction like this. Swims 'acidfeaver' lasted the length of the trip, as swim was near baseline he took some lemsip which dispelled the symptoms, swim felt fine after sleeping.

Anyone else had sore groin and legs or reaction like this? Is this a common body load?

Could swim have had some iffy dodgy RC or the acid was cooked up wrong? Swim knows nothing about RC's and has never heard of a body load like this on acid. Could just be swim though!

ta!

Re: Swim had a Hayfever type reaction to his acid

Quote:
Direct action of D-lysergic acid diethylamide on dispersed mucosal cells from guinea pig stomach.

Batzri S, Dyer J.

In dispersed mucosal cells from guinea pig stomach, D-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) was a partial agonist with respect to histamine. LSD, like histamine, inhibited [3H]histamine binding and increased both cellular cyclic AMP and [14C]aminopyrine uptake by interacting with histamine H2-receptors on parietal cells. These processes were blocked by both histamine H1- and H2-antagonists and, thus, provide evidence that histamine H2-receptors on guinea pig parietal cells resemble those in brain tissue in that they interact with LSD as well as with both classes of histamine antagonists.
Biochem Pharmacol. 1982 Aug 15;31(16):2676-9.

Other studies cite LSD-25 as a partial agonist of histamine too.

So although not a guinea pig, it is possible that the acid in combination with dust & dog hair provoked a histamine reaction (before discounting the dog-hair & dust, does SWiM usually get so close to the carpet?) - is SWiM asthmatic at all? This would compound things.

Histamine can cause severe shortness of breath & cramping, although more usually in the stomach - leg cramps are more consistent with low sodium (salt levels), or sitting in the same position for prolonged periods (easily done on acid). Interestingly, histamine can also give a metallic taste - possibly an explanation for the reports of a metallic taste from good acid that many (A Certain Mouse in his younger days included) have made?

Re: Swim had a Hayfever type reaction to his acid

Bang on.

Swim is terrible with dust, dust tends to cause the same runny nose, blocked sinus but never as bad as the other night. Swim also used to suffer from asthma so all this adds up. Thanks M, this is just what I was looking for.

For future trips, Swim will try to keep his trips outside in the fresh air and his face off the floor!

Do you think an anti histamine tab along side the hit be an idea?

Thanks again M, I would have never found that myself. =)

Re: Swim had a Hayfever type reaction to his acid

SWIMs GF has a similar problem.
Anit-histamines seem to be hit and miss as far as helping. Doesn't seem to hurt anything, but doesn't always help either. IF you can ahbdle it, sometimes smelling some eucalyptis extract seems to help.
Staying away from dust and pet hair is really the best solution.

Both SWIM and his GF have experienced the sore legs thing as well, but not often. Seems to pop up once in awhile and we've just learned to deal with it. Stretching seems to help SWIM when it starts occuring.

swim hopes this is right, he somewhere read some time ago, that D-LSD, which is LDS 25, gets converted to iso-LSD over time, which has almost no psychedelíc powers but can cause leg cramps.

actually, leg cramps are only known to swim through LSA usage (Morning Glory mostly...).

That's a wonderful abstract, thank you. Fills in a lot of gaps.

Good compounds w/ antihistamine action (but without the nasty droopy sedative effects of OTC anticholinergic antihistamines, like Benadryl and Dramamine):

Vitamin C
Citrus Bioflavanoids
SAM-e (200-400mg, between meals)
Trimethylglycine (TMG)
N-acetyl-cysteine (500-600mg, between meals)
Grape seed extract
Pine bark extract (Pycnogenol)

isn't vitamin c & co. antagonistic to LSD? so if you get the symptoms of LSD and consume vitamin C, isn't it likely that it will dampen the trip or even stop it?

Ditto for the other vitamin-based rumor from the late 1960's and '70's, taking huge doses of Niacin will abort a bad trip. It won't. but it will make your skin itch and turn you orange as a carrot.

"My Flamingo" had asthma attacks on LSD before she was diagnosed with mild asthmatic conditions. Obviously, on five hits it was NOT FUCKING PLEASANT.

Surely it is likely that histamine agonism played a role in triggering the symptoms.

Re: Swim had a Hayfever type reaction to LSD

quick update: Swim has some more acid at the weekend, this time it was taken an hour after one antihistamine tab. The entire trip took place outside.

Swim came up and suffered no similar feelings as last time, however, about 2/3 hours into he trip swim was starting to fell very blocked up and swims throat felt swollen and is having trouble breathing normally.

Swim did not have any antihistamines to hand.

Later, close to the 5-6 hour (after dropping) as swim was reaching baseline swim took another 2 antihistamines and felt much much better. Swim will take his antihistamine around an hour after dropping (as he normally takes an hour to come up) swim feels this will cover his entire trip.

SWIM used to take acid and go for walks in the forest last year, and SWIM was always more sensitive than usual to the pollen. All SWIM's senses were heightened, and he assumed it was ll part of the same thing.

Re: Swim had a Hayfever type reaction to LSD

SWIM had a similar reaction this weekend also, but less pronounced. SWIM decided to test the potency of some tabs he bought.

SWIM took one tab and it took two hours for it to kick in (very weak blotter). During the trip SWIM felt a shortness of breath and mild cramps. During the last hours of the trip, SWIM's eyes were irritated. The next day, SWIM had a stuffy nose, headache, and very irritated eyes (never had been this irritated before) even though SWIM took his daily anti-allergy medicine.

This type of reaction has never happened to SWIM--normally, the trip goes smoothly.

Some things to consider, however:
  • SWIM spent most the trip indoors, in a college dormitory
  • SWIM ate sunflower seeds and granola (might be allergic?)
  • The day after was abnormally hot in the area (85 degrees) and might have contributed to a higher pollen count
  • SWIM has allergies and usually takes anti-histamines to combat it (and it's effective too)
